[For seniors] Enjoy spring: April craft ideas

As spring arrives and the weather warms, colorful flowers bloom and we feel lighthearted.

We’d love for older adults—who often find it difficult to go out—to enjoy the cheerful spring atmosphere too.

In this article, we introduce craft ideas recommended for April.

We’ve prepared projects ranging from simple steps like folding origami and tearing paper to slightly more complex tasks like cutting predetermined shapes with scissors.

Please adjust the difficulty level to suit the older adults who will be doing the crafts.

Using the fingertips helps stimulate the brain, and completing a project can bring a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment.

Let’s bring a touch of spring into craft recreation activities.

For Seniors: Enjoy Spring. April Craft Ideas (141–150)

A field of clover

Kimie Gangi Spring Wall Decoration: Field of Clover — April, three-dimensional, easy, cute, beautiful, for seniors
A field of clover

Haven’t you ever gone searching for clovers? They say finding one brings good luck… This video shows you how to actually make those lucky clovers! By making lots of them, you can create a lovely decoration like a field.

They’d be great for room decor or for making calendars at day services, too! The more you make, the more it looks like a grassy meadow.

Try working on it with a big group! Changing the clover colors can add depth as well… Be sure to make plenty and put them to good use!

Collage with stickers and paper postings

[Easy Collage] I made a collage of the April calendar 🌸 [Calendar]
Collage with stickers and paper postings

Let’s collage a simple April calendar with a spring vibe! We’ll add cherry blossom washi tape and patterned papers.

Fill any empty spaces with your favorite flake stickers, like petals or animals.

All the washi tape and stickers used here were purchased at a 100-yen shop.

Since 100-yen shops carry a wide variety of stickers, you can pick your favorites to create a fun, original calendar.

A calendar in full-bloom sakura will warm your heart every time you look at it.

Give it a try!

Nemophila

[Origami] Easy and Cute Nemophila Folding Method ◇ Origami Nemophila Flower — Spring Blue Flower ◇
Nemophila

Nemophila, with its gentle blue blossoms and petite size, softly colors the spring season.

This project recreates nemophila flowers with origami, combining pieces to bring out their delicate charm.

Fold the paper finely toward the center to form five petals, then stack and assemble them to create the nemophila bloom.

Adding small touches—like staggering the layers during assembly or slightly bending the front edges—helps create a three-dimensional look.

Lining up flowers in different shades to make a gradient also seems like a lovely idea.

Rose wall hanging

We’d like to introduce an original rose wall decoration made by rolling paper.

Prepare colored paper for the flowers and leaves.

For the flower, take a strip of colored paper cut thinly: randomly pleat (accordion-fold) two-thirds of the strip, leaving the remaining one-third unpleated.

Starting from the unpleated end, roll the paper; when you finish rolling, glue the end to secure it, and the flower is complete.

For the leaves, similarly roll thin strips of colored paper from one end, glue to secure, then pinch and shape them with your fingers.

For the stem, cut a long, narrow strip and lightly roll it to add a gentle curve.

Arrange and glue the flowers, stems, and leaves onto your choice of backing or base, balancing the layout, and you’re done in no time! Since there are no difficult steps, this craft can also be used as finger dexterity training in senior care facilities.

Sakura wreath made of felt

Felt creations have a soft, cozy texture, don’t they? This felt cherry blossom wreath is a spring-like motif that brightens up any space just by being displayed.

Make five evenly spaced cuts in the pink felt.

Shape each section into a cherry blossom petal.

Sew them together with a needle and thread to form a three-dimensional cherry blossom.

Make white felt blossoms the same way, then add color with blush.

Create small pom-poms from yarn and attach each one to wire to finish.

Be sure to work carefully and safely when using needles and wire.

A cherry blossom wreath—familiar and beloved by many older adults—will warm the hearts of everyone who sees it.

Camellia brooch made of felt

[No-sew, can also be a brooch] Easy felt camellia craft suitable for care facilities and community salons where needles and thread can’t be used
Camellia brooch made of felt

The blooming season for camellias varies by type, but it runs from late November to early April.

They often bloom from February to April in particular, so they’re considered flowers that herald spring.

Let’s try making a seasonal camellia out of felt.

Cut six circles from felt and apply double-sided tape slightly offset from the center.

Fold each felt circle in half where you applied the tape.

Using the stamen you made as the center, wrap the six folded felt pieces around it.

Add leaves to finish the flower.

Attach a safety pin using double-sided tape and felt to complete it.

This is a project that seniors who enjoy sewing are likely to appreciate, even in facilities where using needles is difficult.

tricolor dango

In spring, many people enjoy hanami, viewing the cherry blossoms in full bloom.

Since it’s also an easy season for older adults to go out, some may enjoy flower viewing as well.

Speaking of hanami, sanshoku dango (three-colored dumplings) are a must-have treat.

Let’s make spring-like sanshoku dango out of origami.

Use three colors of origami paper to make balloon shapes and skewer them with a bamboo stick.

That’s it—finished.

By the way, it’s said that the order of the dango colors corresponds to the order in which cherry blossoms bloom: from the top, pink for the buds, white for full bloom, and green for the leafing stage.
