[Childcare] Let’s make things with various materials! A collection of recommended craft ideas for April

April is the season for starting nursery and moving up a grade.

It’s an exciting time with new classes, but it can also feel a bit unsettled.

Here are some craft ideas that children can enjoy in April.

We’ve gathered everything from activities they can really focus on to ideas they can make and then play with.

When we draw out children’s sense of fun, crafting becomes an exciting time.

We’re sharing a variety of ideas so you can choose based on children’s interests and curiosities—please find projects you can incorporate.

Because children’s creations are treated as works, we use the term “制作” (seisaku: production/work) in the text.

[Childcare] Let's create with various materials! Recommended craft ideas for April (21–30)

A butterfly that makes swipe art fun

Recommended for preschoolers! Here’s a fun butterfly idea using swipe art.

Swipe art is an art style that uses a swiping motion—sliding your finger or a tool—while drawing.

Colors spread like flowing paint, and you can enjoy unpredictable blends while creating something dynamic! This time, let’s make the butterfly from the popular children’s book “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.” It’s a great way to enjoy the mixing and changing of colors.

Butterflies made with finger painting

Happy little fingers that stay clean! Here’s a butterfly craft idea using finger painting.

By using a zippered plastic bag, there’s no mess on their fingers, so even infants in the 0-year-old class can enjoy it—such a great point.

With finger-painted butterflies, kids can press with their fingers, step with their feet, or grab with their hands, enjoying art in any way they like.

Using their hands helps develop their senses and fine motor skills, and they can also enjoy the excitement of not knowing exactly how the artwork will turn out.

Let’s create together with the children and have fun seeing what kind of art emerges.

Let’s create crafts using children’s handprints! Here are some handprint butterfly ideas.

Art made with children’s handprints turns into wonderful keepsakes.

The charm is that by taking their handprints, you can preserve their growth and a moment in time as a record! Use your child’s favorite paint colors and enjoy making it in a fun atmosphere.

What you’ll need: construction paper, paint, pipe cleaners, tape, scissors, glue, and a pen.

It would also be fun to display butterflies made with teachers’ or guardians’ handprints side by side with the children’s.

Butterflies made by dyeing with colored water

Let me show you how to make butterflies dyed with colored water.

Prepare kitchen paper towels, construction paper, pipe cleaners, tape, scissors, paint, and empty containers.

Cut the paper towels into four equal pieces, stack them, and tie the center with a pipe cleaner.

Round off both ends of the paper towels with scissors, then unfold them to form the butterfly’s wings.

Dissolve the paint to make colored water in your favorite shades, and dip the paper-towel butterfly in to add color—your spring-like butterfly is complete.

Add a face made from construction paper to create your own cute, original butterfly!

Butterflies made from footprints

It’s great that even children in the infant class can make this! Here are some butterfly craft ideas using footprints.

Using footprints in crafts is wonderful because you can keep them as a record of growth.

When you look back, seeing the size and shape from that time will help you feel how much they’ve grown.

This time, let’s arrange a child’s footprint into the shape of a butterfly.

For the butterfly wings, it’s nice to add stickers or cut out pieces from drawing paper with scribbles.

Be sure to give it a try!

Butterfly made with felt

Combine different materials to create your favorite butterfly! Here are some felt butterfly ideas.

It’s a good idea to prepare a few types of materials in addition to felt so children can choose and mix them on their own.

Cutting the inner materials smaller than the outer ones enhances the butterfly’s three-dimensional look.

You can also use jute twine instead of pipe cleaners.

Making a favorite butterfly while enjoying the softness and colors of felt is sure to be a fun time for kids.

Butterflies made with round stickers

[Preschool Craft] Spring Craft! Colorful Paper Butterflies Made with Construction Paper
Butterflies made with round stickers

Here’s a spring-like butterfly you can make using round stickers.

Prepare in advance the round stickers, felt-tip pens, pipe cleaners, pre-cut butterfly wings, and pre-cut butterfly faces.

Start by decorating the butterfly wings with round stickers to create patterns.

It’s recommended to use a variety of colors for the stickers.

For the butterfly’s face, have them draw the eyes and mouth with felt-tip pens.

Attach a pipe cleaner to the butterfly’s head and curl the tips—that’s it! You’re done.

You might also like to stick them on the wall and add spring flowers around them for a soft, spring-themed display.
