[Get Fired Up!] Classic Sports Day Events: Ideas for Popular Races and Games

When it comes to sports festivals, they’re big events that get everyone—from kids to adults—fired up and having fun!

These days, they’re not just held at schools; some companies also include them as part of their team-building activities.

In this article, we’ll introduce classic events, popular competitions, and games for sports festivals.

If you’re currently planning a sports day and wondering, “What events should I include?”, this is a must-read!

We’ve gathered not only the timeless staples like ball-toss and tug-of-war, but also some unique and creative events.

Whether you love sports or aren’t so confident, let’s put together a program everyone can enjoy and make it a sports day to remember!

Get Everyone Hyped! Classic Sports Day Events: Popular Activities and Game Ideas (11–20)

Jump Rope Relay

Let me introduce a jump-rope relay that really heats up at sports day.

Form teams of several people and run around the track while turning a jump rope.

The rope serves as the baton—pass the rope to the next runner to keep the relay going.

During the relay, coordinating the timing of turning the rope and moving your feet is the key.

The final anchor leg decides the winner! It’s a good idea to adjust the distance and rules to match participants’ ages and fitness levels.

Have fun cheering each other on as a team and do your best to win!

Giant ball rolling

It’s an event where you roll a huge ball—big enough to hide an elementary schooler—either straight ahead or along a track.

You transport it by working together in a team of two or more, but because the ball is so large, it doesn’t always go the way you want, and you might almost collide with other teams.

And since the ball is so big, circling small cones is quite a challenge.

Keep rolling it steadily so you don’t get left behind by the ball before the finish!

long rope jumping

There are occasionally kids who say they can jump rope forever on their own, but this is a team event! It’s group jump rope where several people—or even the whole class—jump over a single long rope.

Jumping is tough, of course, but turning the rope is really hard too: you have to squat down and swing a long rope over and over.

The more people jumping, the more the rope gets filled from end to end.

That means the people positioned at the ends are closer to the handles, so they have to jump the rope when it’s higher than for everyone else.

The trick is to place athletic, nimble kids at the ends!

Chasing Beanbag Toss

With a regular beanbag toss, even those who aren’t confident in their stamina can enjoy it, but this chase-and-toss version requires a bit more fitness.

Split into two or more teams, and have one person on each team wear a basket on their back.

Once the game starts, pick up the balls scattered on the ground and try to throw them into the opposing team’s basket.

Both the person wearing the basket and the throwers can move around freely, so it’s quite physically demanding.

In the end, the team that gets more balls into the other team’s basket wins!

Three-legged race

Two people pair up and tie their legs together with a band or cord, then run as one.

You have to keep in sync—one-two, one-two—or you’ll stumble in an instant, making it a thrilling event.

It’s harder with a height difference, so try to team up with someone about the same height.

Some schools even do three-person four-legged races or events with even more people! Since you run arm-in-arm and match your rhythm, you might end up forming a stronger bond with your teammates.

Tricycle Relay

Tricycle Relay

When it comes to unique events that can liven up a school or company sports day, the tricycle relay tops the list.

Teams compete for speed on kid-sized tricycles, which is the signature rule of the game.

Because the seat is low and the wheels provide steady support, children can take part with peace of mind.

At company-run sports days for adults, you’ll get to see the adorable sight of grown-ups pedaling for all they’re worth.

Watching the tricycles inch forward bit by bit gets the audience cheering wildly, too.

Try adding this unique event to your sports day—it’s fun for everyone from kids to adults!

Stage of Splendor

Stage of Splendor

It’s a really funny event that was always included in the sports day program of the legendary variety show “Lincoln,” hosted by Downtown.

It’s sometimes written as “Hana no Stage” (Flower Stage).

The event is a competition to see how many people can stand on limited spaces, like the top tier of a vaulting box or a small round platform.

It’s simple, but that makes it even more fun.

I think having students compete against teachers would be great, too.

It gets so lively you could practically call it a full-on recreation activity—highly recommended!

Dancing Tamaire

Dancing Tamaire

This is “Dancing Tamaire,” a fusion of the classic sports day events Tamaire (ball toss) and dance.

As the name suggests, you toss balls into the basket, but when the dance music starts, you stop tossing, step out of the circle, and perform a dance.

When the music stops, you return to the circle and resume tossing.

Of course, the points from the ball toss still matter.

It’s simple but involves busy switching, and it’s fun and exciting for spectators to watch.

It seems especially perfect as an event for lower grade students, doesn’t it?

flag

flag

The synchronized movements with flags look really cool and can be quite moving, right? Each person is given a flag and uses their whole body to express themselves by moving the flag up and down, left and right.

When moving the flag, stopping crisply after each motion gives it a tighter look and makes it appear cooler—it’s a key point.

When performing as a group, aligning the horizontal and vertical lines and unifying everyone’s movements can help you put on a cleaner, more powerful flag performance.

It might also strengthen your team spirit if everyone discusses and decides on the flag designs and colors together.

Dice Cone Relay

Dice Cone Relay

This is the “Dice Cone Relay,” which uses a large die and traffic cones.

Each team runs in order along a course with six cones.

Before running, the participant rolls the large die and runs to the cone that matches the number rolled, then returns and passes the baton to the next person.

Since rolling a smaller number means a shorter distance, it can increase your chances of winning—but because the die roll is left to luck, it’s an unpredictable footrace.

Conversely, it’s also an event that’s easy for people who aren’t confident runners to enjoy.
