Group gymnastics

There’s debate about the pros and cons of group gymnastics, but even so, it’s still the star program of school sports days, isn’t it? I think there’s no harm in experiencing everyone working together toward a single goal during your school years.

Lots of ideas to avoid crowding have emerged, and there are even versions like “non-group” gymnastics.

If everyone synchronizes solo skills—like one-legged balance, shoulder stand, bridge, and seal pose—then even individual demonstrations can look like a big group routine.

The “centipede legs,” where people link up like train cars, also has everyone facing the same direction, so you don’t end up face-to-face; it might be the perfect group-gymnastics event for anti-crowding measures!

Challenge Goal

A “Challenge Goal” is a game where you kick a ball at numbered targets, like a baseball strikeout game! Some commercial versions even use Velcro so the ball sticks to the target, making it easy to tally points.

It’s fun on its own, but adding one extra motion beforehand can make it even more exciting! For example, try spinning around with a bat before kicking the ball.

Even if your opponent usually plays soccer, this twist makes the outcome unpredictable and gets everyone hyped!

pole toppling

When it comes to competitions that get the men fired up, “bō-taoshi” (pole toppling) comes to mind.

In this event, two teams face off: one defends the pole and the other tries to topple it.

The defending team has a tough job keeping the attackers away while protecting the pole.

The attacking team aims to bring the pole down by, for example, climbing onto the tip and applying their weight.

While care must be taken to avoid injuries, it’s one of the events that really excites the crowd at sports festivals.

Rock-Paper-Scissors Relay

Rock-Paper-Scissors Relay

How about a 100-meter rock-paper-scissors relay with a U-turn at 50 meters? One representative waits on standby at the 50-meter mark.

When a runner reaches the 50-meter point from the start line, they play rock-paper-scissors with the person on standby.

If the runner wins, they make a U-turn and run back to the start line, pass a sash (or baton) to the next runner, and the next runner does the same.

Since you can’t make the U-turn until you win rock-paper-scissors, you never know which class will win until the very end—making it an exciting relay!

Tic-tac-toe

[True-or-False Quiz] If you get it wrong, something outrageous will happen!!!
Tic-tac-toe

A game that uses true-or-false (circle-or-cross) quiz questions.

You can simply move to the area for the answer you think is correct—circle or cross.

Or add a twist: have players run toward a wall marked with ○ or × for the answer they believe is right, and if they’re wrong, the other side of the wall they jumped into could be a mud pit—that’s fun too! Even if you can’t set up something as elaborate as what you see on TV, you can get creative with handmade penalty games.

If you’re doing it at school, quizzes related to the school would be great!

cheering contest

When it comes to the star attraction of a sports day, isn’t it the cheer battle? It’s not only about uniting the team, but also about putting on a show that entertains the audience—so it’s definitely worth practicing thoroughly and showing your best.

When the moves and chants are perfectly in sync, the whole venue is sure to erupt with excitement and awe.

You can go with a traditional cheering style, or incorporate trendy songs and dances.

The time spent practicing for the cheer battle is a prime opportunity to strengthen team bonds.

It’s the perfect stage for the cheer squad to show what they can do!

backward relay

One of the most popular events at sports days is the relay, right? How about trying a backward relay, where you run facing backward? It’s a simple idea—just run backward—but you’ll probably find it surprisingly challenging.

Since we don’t usually move backward in everyday life, it creates a strange sensation.

Give it a try and feel it for yourself.

Another tricky part is that you can’t see the person you’re handing the baton to.

It demands more calling out to each other and stronger teamwork than usual.
