Get Fired Up! Classic Sports Day Events: Popular Activities and Game Ideas (21–30)

Flip-over race

At the Fukui City nursery school sports day, parent-child event: Card Flip! Try this popular game together at the sports day!
Flip-over race

A flipping race where you turn over double-sided cards laid on the ground to your team’s color! It’s like a giant version of Othello, but in some ways even more intense.

Within the time limit, you keep flipping as many cards as you can to the side showing your team’s color or picture.

But the opposing team is flipping at the same time, so it becomes a cycle of flipping and getting flipped back…

In the end, the team with more cards showing their side when time runs out wins!

write-off

write-off

A sport where players split into two teams and pull sticks placed in the center back to their own side.

The team that brings more sticks into their territory wins.

There’s also a variation called “tire pulling,” where tires are used instead of sticks.

A tip for winning: if you end up grappling over a stick, it’s easier to take it if you keep your hips as high as possible rather than dropping them low like in tug-of-war.

dance

dance

The energetic dances at sports day really show how much the kids have grown, don’t they? It’s a good idea to choose familiar, upbeat songs that match the event’s theme.

Keep the choreography simple, age-appropriate, and easy to remember, and avoid making formation changes too complicated.

Coordinating costumes to create a sense of unity can make the event even more exciting.

The children may also discover the joy of expressing themselves through movement to music and the happiness of working together as a team.

Dizzy bat relay

Sports Day (Dizzy Bat Relay) ①
Dizzy bat relay

Here’s a dizzy bat relay everyone can enjoy.

Split into teams, place your forehead on the bat, and spin the designated number of times.

After spinning, kick the ball once, pick it up, run one lap of the track, and pass it to the next person.

The speed of your spins will be the key.

You might get dizzy and have trouble running straight, so make sure to do this safely in a spacious area free of obstacles.

The relay ends when the final runner crosses the finish line.

Do your best to keep your balance and aim for the goal!

Gesture Game Relay

Period 27: Open Class – Gesture Relay

The children’s serious expressions during the all-out events—like the walking race where they’re determined to “absolutely not lose!”—are truly moving, showing the results of their daily practice.

How about adding a lighter event to the program: a Gesture Game Relay? The rules are to pass along the prompt using gestures and aim for the finish in relay format.

Since the schoolyard is large, the key is to prepare the prompts on larger sheets of paper so they’re easy to see.

Because the relay is the main point, simple prompts like “monkey” or “cat” work best.

Let’s create a wonderful sports day with a well-balanced program that blends tension and relaxation!

raft floating

Ikada-nagashi is a competition where several people bend over like in leapfrog, lining up to form a path, and a single runner dashes across their backs.

As soon as someone’s back is stepped on, they must quickly run ahead of the runner to keep creating a new path.

The runner typically holds hands with supporting teammates, but maintaining balance is still tough.

It’s a thrilling event that’s guaranteed to get everyone excited.

bread-eating contest

Bread-Eating Race: Takarazuka City Citizens' Sports Day
bread-eating contest

A reward for you while running? The bread-eating race! In fact, it has a long history and has been held for about 130 years.

In a bread-eating race, there’s a spot along a regular footrace course where you grab a piece of bread and then run while biting it.

The bread is often hung along the course from a pole like a laundry line, suspended with strings or clothespins.

You’re not allowed to use your hands to take the bread or to hold it while running afterward! It may look like a fun little reward of getting bread, but it’s actually a deceptively tough event.

Racket Express Relay

A competition where pairs work together to carry a ball by pinching it between tennis or badminton rackets.

Synchronizing with your partner is crucial.

You also need to finely adjust how much pressure you apply when holding the ball between the rackets.

If you squeeze too hard, the ball will fly off; if you squeeze too lightly, it will drop.

It’s an event that demands concentration on many things at once: running, carrying the ball, and staying in sync with your partner!

Delivery signature relay

This is an arrangement for a delivery relay.

Place stacks of cardboard boxes a little ahead of the starting line.

On the top surface of each box, attach a sheet of paper with the recipient teacher’s name, making sure it’s easy to peel off.

Teachers should line up and stand by just before the finish line.

When the relay starts, participants take a box and run to deliver it to the teacher whose name is written on it.

Upon reaching the teacher, call out their name and receive their signature.

Peel off the paper, carry the signed sheet, and run to the finish line.

It’s a relay that encourages interaction with the teachers and makes it more fun!

Caterpillar Race

Sports Day Mishap: Caterpillar Race

The caterpillar tracks you see on tractors and similar vehicles.

Caterpillar racing is a game where you crawl on all fours inside a tube shaped like those tracks.

While there are special soft “caterpillar mats” sold for this, it’s also fine to make one yourself out of cardboard! Crawling on all fours inside the tube is surprisingly tough… The crawling that seemed effortless as a baby becomes pretty exhausting once you’re older.
