[For 2-Year-Olds] Craft Ideas to Enjoy in August! Incorporate Summery Motifs and Techniques

August is the month when two-year-olds can enjoy summer the most! How about having fun with lively two-year-olds through enjoyable craft activities? Here, we’re sharing craft ideas that bring a sense of coolness for August days that are too hot to play outside.

There are ideas using various materials and techniques, so enjoy the hot month of August together with the children! Since we treat what the children make as works (art pieces), we use the term “production” in the text.

[Cotton Swab Stamps] Transparent Jellyfish

Let’s make a cool, breezy jellyfish using a cotton swab stamp.

First, cut a clear file into the shape of a jellyfish head and stamp on it.

Use white acrylic paint and enjoy stamping freely.

Add round stickers for extra patterns to make it cute.

Prepare a border for the jellyfish head with construction paper and attach it to the clear file using double-sided tape.

Then cut cellophane (raffia) tape to a suitable length, stick it on as the jellyfish’s tentacles, and have the children split the tape—done!

[Footprint] Cute Watermelon Decoration

Here’s a slightly unique watermelon craft idea that uses children’s footprints.

First, make footprints using red paint.

Overlap two footprints slightly to form a triangle shape, then add seeds with black finger-stamp dots or round stickers.

Attach green construction paper along the bottom to create the rind.

Decorate with paper tape or origami, and you’ll have an adorable footprint watermelon! It’s a perfect summer craft and a great way to record your child’s growth.

Sparkling transparent lantern

Let’s make cute, sparkly skeleton lanterns together with the kids.

First, prepare two clear plastic cups and stuff them with transparent origami paper.

Using a variety of colors will make the finished lanterns vibrant.

Next, align the rims of the cups and secure them with tape.

Then, decorate the outside of the cups with stickers, such as stars.

Finally, attach black paper bands to the top and bottom.

If you’re working with two-year-olds, it’s a fun idea to plan which steps to let the children handle.

Vivid Fireworks Made with Straws

[Age 2] Feel the summer! Make fireworks using straws!
Vivid Fireworks Made with Straws

Let’s have fun making fireworks with straw stamps.

To make the stamp, cut several slits into one end of a straw and flare them outward.

Give the kids some paint to dip the stamp into, then have them dab it onto black construction paper.

Just pressing it creates shapes that really look like fireworks.

Overlapping looks beautiful too, so prepare paints in various colors and let them express fireworks freely.

Once finished, you can hang them on the wall and enjoy a little fireworks viewing.

Rainbow shaved ice

[Nursery/Kindergarten] Rainbow Shaved Ice for Summer Festival Pretend Play! [July Craft]
Rainbow shaved ice

How about making rainbow shaved ice that’s perfect for a summer festival pretend play? First, crumple some newspaper and stuff it into a paper cup.

Place a coffee filter over the top, shape it, and secure it with tape.

Prepare several colors of paint thinned with water.

Use a straw or brush to pick up the paint and drip it onto the coffee filter.

If you dilute the paint with plenty of water, it will bleed beautifully.

Once the coffee filter is colored, it’s done! If you’re planning to play pretend, it might be a good idea to have extra materials ready so you can make several.

Drawing with colored ice

[Summer Craft] Painting with Colored Ice! [For 1-Year-Olds]
Drawing with colored ice

Here’s a perfect ice-painting activity for hot summer days.

First, draw a picture on drawing paper with a white crayon.

We recommend adding summer themes like sea creatures, fireworks, or sunflowers to set the mood.

Next, mix food coloring with water and pour it into an ice tray to make colorful ice.

Insert a popsicle stick into each compartment before freezing so you’ll have a handle to hold while painting.

Once the ice is ready, use the colorful ice to paint over the paper where you drew.

As the ice melts, the paper will take on color and the white drawing will appear.

Kids can enjoy the excitement of wondering, “What picture will appear?” Since you’re using food coloring, it’s an easy and safe activity for young children to try.

Fireworks stamp using a toilet paper roll

Fireworks Craft (Ages 2–5): A Summer Project Using Toilet Paper Rolls
Fireworks stamp using a toilet paper roll

Let’s make stamps using toilet paper tubes and use them to paint fireworks.

You’ll need a few toilet paper tubes, black construction paper, paints, and a tray for the paint.

Draw guide lines on the tubes so you don’t cut too far, then use scissors to make fine cuts up to the lines.

After cutting, flare the cut sections outward.

Make several of these; if you vary the fineness and depth of the cuts to create different types, the final result will be more interesting.

Dip the stamps in paint and press them onto the black paper, and you’re done.
