[For 2-Year-Olds] Craft Ideas to Enjoy in August! Incorporate Summery Motifs and Techniques

August is the month when two-year-olds can enjoy summer the most! How about having fun with lively two-year-olds through enjoyable craft activities? Here, we’re sharing craft ideas that bring a sense of coolness for August days that are too hot to play outside.

There are ideas using various materials and techniques, so enjoy the hot month of August together with the children! Since we treat what the children make as works (art pieces), we use the term “production” in the text.

Making T-shirts with stamps

“Let’s Make Our Own T-Shirts!” [2-Year-Olds] | Minami Senrioka Yūiku-en [Nursery/Kindergarten Event]
Making T-shirts with stamps

Would you like to have fun making T-shirts with stamps? T-shirts freely expressed on construction paper will become favorite creations.

First, have the children fold small pieces of cardboard into triangles and secure them with tape.

Use these to stamp patterns onto T-shirt-shaped construction paper.

Once the patterns are done, hang them up to dry like laundry to enjoy even more of a T-shirt vibe.

If making your own T-shirt sparks interest, it’s also a great chance to practice folding a real T-shirt.

This craft is perfect for two-year-olds who are rapidly gaining new skills.

[Scissors] Sea Creatures

Scissor Practice [Summer Craft] Let’s make an ocean with scissors and glue! Perfect for developing fine motor skills! [For ages 2–3]
[Scissors] Sea Creatures

Let’s make some sea creatures while practicing scissor skills.

Use sea animals with lots of legs—like octopuses, squids, and jellyfish—as motifs.

Draw them on construction paper and cut them out.

Draw lines on the legs, and have the children cut along those lines with scissors.

For two-year-olds, straight lines are probably better than curves.

You can also raise the difficulty a bit by trying seaweed drawn with zigzag lines.

Once everything is cut out, paste the pieces onto paper to create a summertime ocean scene.

flower wind chime

Craft: “Flower Wind Chimes” [Ages 0+] [How to Make] [Childcare] [July] [August]
flower wind chime

Here’s how to make a cute flower wind chime using tissue paper.

First, create a template for the wind chime part using construction paper, then use it to cut the outer shell from a clear file folder.

Attach double-sided tape to the cut clear plastic, and stick on pieces of tissue paper that you’ve torn and crumpled.

This is the most fun step, so let the kids do this part! Once the exterior is done, make a tanzaku (paper strip) from origami paper, thread a bell onto a string, and connect the exterior and the tanzaku.

Finally, attach the hanging string, and you’re done.

You can use a single color of tissue paper for a cohesive look, or mix several colors for a bright, colorful finish.

Colorful-sticker fish

Sticker play suitable from age 1: Let’s make colorful fish with paper plates!
Colorful-sticker fish

Why not make colorful fish with sticker pasting? Round stickers are easy for little hands to peel and stick, so they’re sure to be captivated! If you’re incorporating this into a July craft, turn paper plates into summery fish motifs.

To let the children go all out with sticker pasting, portion the stickers into small amounts and put them in cases so they’re easy to use.

The colorful polka-dotted fish look cool and give an early taste of summer.

Each child’s individuality will show in how they place the stickers, so once they’re finished, it’ll be fun to display their creations!

Three-dimensional sunflower

How to Make Sunflowers: Summer Craft for July and August (Nursery Schools and Kindergartens)
Three-dimensional sunflower

We’re introducing a summer-themed craft: making a three-dimensional sunflower.

First, draw guidelines on construction paper or origami paper and cut out the sunflower parts with scissors.

After gluing the parts together to form the sunflower, stand it up by inserting it into a paper cup with slits cut in the rim to finish.

The steps vary by age, but for two-year-olds, they can enjoy drawing patterns for the seeds with a pen and decorating the paper cup with stickers.

Since cutting out the parts and assembling them involves scissors, craft knives, and tape, please have the teacher handle those steps.

[Footprint] Beach Sandals

This is a cute craft for making beach sandals using children’s footprints.

Cut white construction paper into a circle and draw wave patterns with a white crayon.

Paint blue watercolor over it so the kids can enjoy the crayon-resist effect.

This will be the base, so once the paint dries, glue it onto thick cardstock.

Next, trace the child’s foot, cut it into a sandal shape, and glue it onto the cardstock.

Punch three holes where the strap (pipe cleaner) will go, and secure the pipe cleaner after the children thread beads onto it.

Your footprint sandals are complete.

If you prepare paints and pipe cleaners in several colors, the children can enjoy choosing their favorites.

Painting with ice paints

[Nursery & Kindergarten] Drawing with ice!? Perfect summer-colored water play ❄️
Painting with ice paints

If you’re looking for a cool idea perfect for summer, why not try painting with ice? This activity involves freezing water mixed with paint and using it to draw.

Prepare a palette with compartments, paints for coloring, and straws to serve as handles.

The key is to mix the paint a bit on the thick side.

When freezing, to keep the straws from tipping over, cover the palette with aluminum foil after the paint is mixed, poke holes, and insert the straws through them.

Slightly thicker drawing paper may also be better, as it’s less likely to tear.

Don’t set a specific composition or theme—let the kids enjoy free drawing.

In conclusion

We introduced craft ideas to enjoy with two-year-olds in August.

In the hot summer, there are plenty of themes that broaden children’s worlds, such as festivals, sea creatures, and cold foods.

If you try incorporating new materials and techniques, the children might make wonderful discoveries.

Please use the ideas we introduced as inspiration for your craft activities.
