Cat songs that overlap with various emotions. A richly diverse collection of cat tunes.

Speaking of February 22, it’s Cat Day! In Japan, it was established in 1987.

Cats can keep a bit of distance and then suddenly get affectionate—their free-spirited nature is incredibly cute, isn’t it? There are also songs that sing about “cats” or are related to them, and many people might feel there are quite a few classics.

Beyond the adorable tunes that make your heart flutter, there are plenty of cat songs: ones from a cat’s point of view, songs wishing “I want to be a cat,” and moving tracks that mirror human emotions with feline traits.

In this article, we’ve picked out some especially recommended cat songs.

If you’re a cat lover who actually has a kitty, be sure to listen together and enjoy a happy time.

Nekomimi Archivekuso inaka P

This is a Hatsune Miku song released in 2012.

As the 24th track to enter the Hall of Fame, it’s an incredibly cool piece that growls with intense guitar sounds, featuring lyrics that depict the push-and-pull of romance from the perspective of a world-weary cat.

It’s also one of Nico Nico’s popular songs and was even novelized.

I’m a cat.Matsumoto Gōsei

It’s a short yet concise cat song used on NHK Educational TV’s morning program.

The “appearance” changes every time, matching photos of viewers’ pet cats that are submitted.

By the way, there’s also a girl version called “Atashi, Neko,” but I can’t help thinking the boy version’s phrasing is more overbearing—and more cat-like.

This is the opening theme of the 2012 anime “Nyarko-san: Another Crawling Chaos.” It was this anime that made the “Uu! Nyaa!” chant and the ASCII art go viral online.

It’s an oddly addictive track where a cute, laid-back-voiced female voice actor sings over intensely unfolding music.

CAT WALKD=Out

A B-side track from D=OUT’s third single “Aisuru Hito,” released on May 2, 2012.

It’s an acoustic pop song with a sense of the seasons, imagining what it would be like to become a cat and take a stroll through the usual town.

This is a Hatsune Miku song released in 2012.

Does it sound like an instrumental to you? She’s actually singing—just endlessly “NyaNyaNyaNyaNya.” If a human tried to sing it precisely at karaoke, their jaw and tongue would probably go out of whack.

catYoshida Minako

A song released on September 21, 1973 as Minako Yoshida’s debut single.

It is included on the album “Tobira no Fuyu” (Winter’s Door).

This is a slow-tempo, sorrowful ballad sung over piano and strings about superstitions related to cats.
