I’m Hiyoko-sensei, a former nursery school teacher from Hyogo Prefecture. Ever since I was five, my dream was to become a childcare worker, and before I knew it, 20 years had passed since I achieved that dream. Through singing and playing with the children, I kept working with the spirit of someone in their twenties, even as I increasingly felt my physical limits year by year (haha). From here on, I’d like to share helpful information carefully and thoughtfully, drawing on my on-site experience.

For little ones at 0 years old, it’s their very first Christmas—a special time full of excitement and discovery.

Here, we’re sharing craft ideas that use paper plates, colored construction paper, and tissue paper, so 0-year-olds can safely touch and enjoy making them.

Decorate your classroom with seasonal creations like snowmen, reindeer, and Christmas trees.

Tailor the activities to each child’s interests and development, and have fun exploring different textures through touching, sticking, and tearing.

Because we regard what children make as completed works, we use the term “制作” (seisaku: production/creation) in the text.

When you decorate the Christmas tree with ornaments you made yourself, it makes you even more excited for the holiday, doesn’t it? This craft is a wonderful idea that will have both kids and adults looking forward to Christmas.

Prepare OPP bags, cotton, and chenille stems (pipe cleaners).

Put cotton into the OPP bag and tie the middle with a pipe cleaner to form a snowman shape.

If you add plenty of cotton, it’s easier to make the snowman.

Finally, add the snowman’s face and hat to finish.

You can also make Santa Claus using the same method to make it even more festive!

Fluffy and cute! Here’s an idea for making a fluffy snowman with tissue paper.

You’ll need a paper plate, glue, tissue paper, construction paper, and crayons.

Cut out the center of a paper plate, apply glue to the outer ring, and stick on the tissue paper.

Using multiple colors instead of just one looks adorable, too.

On another paper plate, draw the face with crayons and top it with a bucket hat made from construction paper—then you’re done! It’ll look lovely on a wall or hanging from the ceiling.

Tear and paste freely! Here are some ideas for making a Christmas tree with torn-paper collage.

What you’ll need: construction paper, origami paper, patterned origami paper, glue, and scissors.

First, tear the origami paper into pieces however you like and paste them onto the construction paper.

Once it’s covered, cut the paper into the shape of a tree—and you’re done! Add a trunk and a star, and decorate your room with your Christmas tree! When pasting origami onto the construction paper, it’s safer to do it together with a parent or teacher.

Once you get used to the process, try sticking the pieces on by yourself!
