Anime characters (1–10)
Tarao Fuguta

A character that anyone, regardless of gender, can try is Tara-chan from Sazae-san.
Use a high, coddling tone and a childlike voice, and saying things like “It is ___” will almost complete it! Unlike Katsuō-kun’s famous line “That’s not fair, sis,” there isn’t a signature quote, but if you slightly stretch the ending of your words, anything you say will sound like Tara-chan.
It’s also fun to have him say lines he definitely wouldn’t, with a bit of bite, like “The interest rate on my loan went up and life is tough,” or “I’ll make sure that manager never sets foot in the office again, it is.”
Medama-oyaji

It’s an impression of quick-fire mimicry.
The classic manga GeGeGe no Kitaro by master Shigeru Mizuki.
I’m taking on the challenge of that uniquely high-pitched voice of Medama-oyaji, Kitaro’s father! For many adults, Medama-oyaji’s voice is strongly associated with Isamu Tanonaka, but since 2018 it’s been performed by Masako Nozawa, famous for voicing Goku in Dragon Ball.
Which means if you can do a Goku impression, you can do a Medama-oyaji impression too.
By the way, Nozawa once played Kitaro as well.
Maybe she could do a parent-child duet all by herself?
Elmo

Elmo is one of the most iconic and popular characters from Sesame Street.
He’s known for his red fur, his hurried movements, and his high-pitched, fast-talking voice.
Think of using a falsetto and speaking quickly, with slightly unclear enunciation—that’s the key.
His big, distinctive laugh is also memorable, so it might help to include laughter in the conversation.
Since he doesn’t have many signature catchphrases, it may be more important to rely on the speed and energy of the delivery.
Nyan-chu

Nyanchu is a popular character from NHK’s educational programs for children.
Having been active since the 1990s, he’s supported by a wide range of generations.
His distinctive raspy voice is something you wouldn’t expect from his cute look, modeled after a blue mouse costume.
The key to doing an impression is to add accents in the middle of sentences and speak with lots of energy.
He’s recommended for those confident in their low register or anyone who wants to try a unique character voice.
Try changing the first person pronoun “boku” or “watashi” to “mee,” and add “nya” at the end of your sentences when you speak.
Crayon Shin-chan

A classic, easy impression? It’s an impression of Shin-chan, the protagonist of the anime Crayon Shin-chan.
The voice actor changed in 2018, right? And when TV shows ask celebrities, “Can you do any impressions?” aren’t there a lot of people who do Crayon Shin-chan? I’m sure it’s that easy to imitate.
It’s also important to say lines that sound like something Shin-chan—a slightly precocious kindergartener—would say.
Doraemon

It’s practically the gold standard of impressions—maybe even the classic choice.
Let’s try doing a voice impression of Doraemon, the main character of the beloved, nationally famous anime Doraemon! You might think, “If I’m just listening, it seems doable,” but when you actually try it, you may not know how to produce the voice.
Don’t worry! Because the character is so well-known, there are plenty of impression videos and tutorials that teach you tips on how to make the voice.
And while I called it ‘national,’ Doraemon is popular not only in Japan but overseas as well, so it’s a reliable bit to have in your repertoire!
Anime characters (11–20)
Lupin the Third

It’s an anime character that everyone, young and old, knows.
He’s playful and clumsy, but he also has a cool side where he really delivers when it counts.
For an easy Lupin impression, use a cheerful voice and say something silly—introductions are a classic.
If you want to take your impression a step further, why not try portraying Lupin speaking coolly in a serious scene? It requires acting skill, so it’s not something you can just pull off casually, but it might be very rewarding.
