[Easy to Try] Anime That Are Simple to Imitate: Characters That Are Easy to Voice Imitate
There are times, like at company parties or get-togethers with friends, when you’re expected to show off a little party trick, right? When it comes to classic party tricks, doing impressions is the go-to.
Among those, impressions of anime characters really liven things up! In this article, we’ll introduce some staple anime characters for impressions.
We’ve gathered the classics that almost everyone has tried at least once, like Shinnosuke Nohara and Mickey Mouse.
If you’re not sure what to do, use the characters we introduce as a reference and give it a try!
Classic Characters (1–10)
Chopper

Chopper is known for his high-pitched voice.
He’s a character from the nationally beloved anime One Piece.
He’s voiced by Ikue Ōtani, who’s also famous for playing Pikachu in Pokémon and Mitsuhiko in Detective Conan.
Once you hear that voice, it really sticks in your head, doesn’t it? Since Chopper is a childlike character, speaking with a slightly lisping delivery might help you sound more like him.
While his voice is strongly associated with a high pitch, he naturally speaks calmly in serious scenes, so it’s probably best to practice those first before straining your voice and making it hoarse.
Stitch

Stitch, with his cute blue appearance, is a character known for his distinctive look and voice.
The essence of voice impersonation lies in capturing a character’s personality, and in Stitch’s case, the key points are his raspy voice and the way he elongates the ends of words.
The version of Stitch voiced by Koichi Yamadera has a unique, husky tone; when imitating it, it helps to focus on resonating the sound inside your mouth.
Mei
Mei-chan from Studio Ghibli’s iconic film My Neighbor Totoro has a very distinctive way of speaking, so she’s often a popular subject for impressions.
Since the film is widely known and Mei-chan has many famous lines, it’s an impression that’s easy for audiences to recognize.
The key points when doing the impression are how you add intonation to the voice and how you reproduce her unique pacing and pauses.
Gian

If you’re choosing a character for maximum impact, Gian is a great pick.
Gian is a character from the anime Doraemon, known for his overbearing personality and disastrously bad singing.
Imitating Gian will be instantly recognizable, and it’s easy to ad-lib lines.
By the way, there are different versions of Gian: the current one voiced by Subaru Kimura and the earlier one voiced by Kazuya Tatekabe.
Each has its own appeal, so why not imitate whichever you prefer?
Pikachu

An impression that people of all ages—and even across borders—will understand is Pikachu.
As many know, it’s the yellow, mouse-like character from the Pokémon animated series.
Since Pikachu doesn’t speak human language, it uses variations of cries like “Pikachu” and “Pika-pika~” to express joy, anger, sadness, and more.
If you watch the show, you’ll notice how voice actor Ikue Otani brings astonishing emotional nuance to the role.
Mastering this and having others guess the emotion can be a lot of fun.
Calcifer and the Blue Frog

These are the familiar Studio Ghibli characters Calcifer from Howl’s Moving Castle and Aogaeru (the blue frog) from Spirited Away.
These two roles are actually voiced by the same person: Tatsuya Gashuin, an actor known for his distinctive style.
To imitate them, imagine tightening your throat.
For some people, stopping the nasal airflow might feel more natural.
Speaking a bit quickly and keeping your intonation flatter also helps.
Aim for a role in a Ghibli film!
Baikinman

As an easy voice imitation technique, I recommend copying Baikinman, a character from the anime “Soreike! Anpanman.” His distinctive line, “Hahi Fuhe Ho~,” is instantly recognizable as Baikinman’s, making it easy to perform.
Because the intonation of his lines is so characteristic, it’s approachable even for beginners.
The key is to mimic his vocal tone and accent.
He’s loved by people of all ages, so it’s great for showing off anywhere.
