[For Seniors] Exercise Your Brain with Fun Logic Puzzles!

This time, we’re introducing logic puzzles you can enjoy as a recreational activity!

A logic puzzle is one where you carefully read the problem statement, look for clues within the text, and use them to arrive at the answer.

Unlike quizzes that rely solely on knowledge, and different from riddles that hinge on flashes of inspiration, these puzzles have their own unique flavor.

Depending on the problem, there may be elements of calculation or trick questions, making them great for a mental workout.

Why not try answering with a free and flexible mindset, without overthinking it?

Logic puzzles tend to have longer statements, but this time we’ve prepared shorter ones.

Please feel free to use them as brain training for older adults.

Let’s focus on the fact that all the labels have been switched. For example, consider the case where the contents of either the apple-labeled box or the pear-labeled box are pears. Since all the labels are wrong, the box labeled “Apples” contains pears. In that case, the remaining box labeled “Pears” contains either apples or pears.

Since you get 1 candy for every 5 you eat, you might calculate that you can eat 20 in total. But let’s think further. If you eat those 20 candies you received, you’ll get 4 more, right? The problem asks for the total number of candies you can eat, so the correct answer is 124, which is 100 + 20 + 4.

A single cell doubles to two cells in one minute. Since the problem states that it starts from two cells, you subtract the first minute from 60 minutes. With two cells, you might be tempted to answer that “the container will be full in 30 minutes.” It’s a question where thinking deeply is the key!

It’s the idea that there are two snails in front of the one at the very back, and two snails behind the one at the very front. You might be tempted to answer five, but it may be easier if you picture all the snails as a whole. Carefully reading the problem statement is also key.

You’d think the odds are the same whether you go first or second, right? In this case, going second is actually advantageous. For example, if you eat three and it turns out to be the cream-filled bun, then the last one will be the wasabi-filled bun. Since you already know the answer, the second player can choose not to eat the wasabi-filled bun.

It may look like a complicated problem, but you can find the counterfeit in just two weighings. Place three coins on each side of the balance; if they balance, the remaining two coins contain the counterfeit. If one side is lighter when weighing three vs. three, weigh again using the three lighter coins. The method is: weigh two of those three on the balance; if they balance, the unweighed coin is the counterfeit. If they don’t balance, the lighter coin on the balance is the counterfeit. Thinking of it as “an efficient way to find the lighter coin” might add a game-like element and make it more fun.

If you add up the animals that appear in order, you get 15, right? It’s a trick question that makes you fixate on listing and adding the animals. In fact, if you read the problem carefully, it doesn’t say the squirrel is “heading to the forest.” Therefore, the correct answer is 9: one fox, plus four kangaroos and the joeys in each of their pouches.
