Eurobeat is a genre that gained popularity as a mainstream form of dance music in the 1980s.

Although the boom overseas lasted only until the early 1990s at most, in Japan it has been loved for a long time, with Eurobeat being used widely across many types of media up through the 2000s.

This time, we’re introducing some classic Eurobeat tracks!

From songs everyone has heard at least once to timeless hits covered by Japanese artists—check out this curated selection of must-hear classics!

Alessandra Mirka Gatti, an Italian artist affectionately known as Domino, gained popularity in Italy, the hotbed of Eurobeat, and was active in the 1990s.

Her song “Tora Tora Tora” is one of her hits, released in 1994.

Two years later, in 1996, the dance-vocal group MAX covered it, which helped it become popular in Japan as well.

Toy BoySinitta

Speaking of Sinitta, I think this song is definitely her most famous.

Of course, she has many other excellent tracks, but when it comes to Sinitta, it’s got to be Toy Boy.

No matter when you listen to it, its irrepressible brightness lifts your spirits—one of the defining traits that ran through early Eurobeat as a whole.

This is an early Eurobeat classic that makes you feel a major Eurobeat boom is just about to arrive.

There’s still a bit of Eurobeat and techno getting mixed together, but that’s precisely what characterizes early Eurobeat tracks.

It even evokes a bit of Ann Lewis.

Toy BoySinitta

Here’s a song released in 1987 by Sinitta, a singer who was born in the United States but made her career in the UK.

The lyrics are about leading a cute boy around like a toy.

In Japan, a comparable song would be Candies’ “Toshishita no Otokonoko” (“Younger Boy”).

Sinitta’s mother was also a singer, and Sinitta herself was engaged to Simon Cowell, who discovered and produced her, and dated Brad Pitt when he was still unknown—perhaps living out the theme of the song in real life.

Blue (Da Ba Dee)Eiffel 65

A track characterized by auto-tuned vocals, nonsensical lyrics, and a catchy melody.

It was released in 1999 by the Italian music group Eiffel 65.

It was sampled in Uzi’s 2014 track “Blue.”
