Eurobeat is a genre that gained popularity as a mainstream form of dance music in the 1980s.

Although the boom overseas lasted only until the early 1990s at most, in Japan it has been loved for a long time, with Eurobeat being used widely across many types of media up through the 2000s.

This time, we’re introducing some classic Eurobeat tracks!

From songs everyone has heard at least once to timeless hits covered by Japanese artists—check out this curated selection of must-hear classics!

Dream, who sadly ended their activities in 2017.

Even as the members changed several times, they continued to deliver the same unmistakable vocals and songs to listeners.

Amid the Eurobeat boom, Dream had a unique color that never got lost, and I believe many young people were inspired by that charm to start dancing.

I think this is the Eurobeat sound that’s widely known in Japan.

Avex distributed this kind of Eurobeat under the name “Super Eurobeat,” which made it widely recognized.

It was also used many times in the anime Initial D, leading people from a broad audience to become familiar with Eurobeat.

Maio & Co.

is one of the aliases of Italian Eurobeat producer Laurent Gelmetti.

HeartbeatPassion

Passion is an Avex artist known for strong Eurobeat.

Especially with this song, the melodies in the verse, pre-chorus, and chorus are all great, so I think it would be super fun to sing with a big group at karaoke, and it would definitely hype things up if you dance while singing too! Just be careful not to get too carried away.

Hot LoveJenny Kee

It might be fair to call it the final form of Italo disco at the dawn of eurobeat.

By this stage, the baseline and rhythm already establish the core template of eurobeat.

If you add metallic percussion, shouts, orchestral hits, and a distorted guitar sound, then speed up the tempo, you get the basic form of later eurobeat.

Does that give you a rough picture?

Freedom (Global Extended Mix)globe

Globe – Freedom (Global Extended Mix)

KEIKO’s voice, with its range and slight huskiness, really is cool.

Everyone knows they’re a monster artist—with a Japan Record Award and double million sales—and once again I was reminded of just how amazing Tetsuya Komuro’s songwriting and arrangements are.

Dreams (Will Come Alive)2 Brothers on the 4th Floor

Dreams (Will Come Alive)2 Brothers on the 4th Floor

A track released as a single in 1994 by the Dutch Eurodance group 2 Brothers on the 4th Floor.

It became a hit in Australia and several European countries.

The track is featured in the films Flodder 3 and New Kids Nitro.

Eat You UpAngie Gold

I imagine there’s hardly anyone who doesn’t know this song.

It became a huge hit when Yoko Oginome covered it.

Some people who aren’t familiar with Western music even said things like, “A foreign singer is singing Oginome’s song!”—it’s a classic example of a cover version becoming more famous than the original.
