For older kindergarteners: Let’s make it! A collection of recommended origami ideas for February

February brings a string of cold days, which means more time playing indoors, doesn’t it?

That’s why we recommend origami play.

In this article, we’re sharing a collection of origami ideas you’ll want to try in February.

As graduation from kindergarten approaches, many older children have gained lots of new skills.

Even with origami models they’re making for the first time, many children can now follow instructions or an origami book and fold on their own without the teacher guiding each step.

If teachers create and display origami diagrams, children can choose what they want to make and fold freely!

It’s wonderful to provide an environment where children can make what they want, when they want.

Please use these ideas as inspiration and try making all kinds of things!

For older preschoolers: Let’s make it! A collection of recommended origami ideas for February (1–10)

Japanese pilchard on holly leaves

[Setsubun Origami] How to Make Holly-Iwashi (Hiiragi Iwashi) / Setsubun Sardines (Origami Time)
Japanese pilchard on holly leaves

Recommended for Setsubun events! Here are some ideas for making a hiiragi iwashi.

You will need: origami paper for the sardine head, two sheets for the twig, two sheets for the holly, tape or glue, a black pen, and white round stickers.

Many preschools and households hold bean-throwing events for Setsubun.

Do you have any children who are afraid to participate because they don’t like the oni (ogres)? That’s when hiiragi iwashi comes in handy! Hiiragi iwashi combines holly leaves, which oni dislike, with a sardine head.

It’s cherished as a talisman to keep oni from entering, so try making it while learning about its meaning and origins.

Tripod with legs

[Origami] How to Make a Three-Legged Sanpō Stand 👹.*・゚ [origami] Setsubun Accessory Case | Easy | Cute | Stylish | Traditional
Tripod with legs

Great for a variety of events! Here’s an idea for making a legged sanpō (offering tray) out of origami.

All you need is origami paper in your favorite colors or patterns.

Many preschools and households shout “Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!” while tossing beans for Setsubun, right? At times like that, how about using this legged origami sanpō? It’s perfect for holding beans, of course, and it’s also handy for small items, so it’s highly recommended.

The step where you open up the box is easy to understand, so give it a try!

A snowman and a snow hut (kamakura)

[Origami] Easy and Cute Snowman and Igloo Folding Tutorial / Winter Origami Decorations for Christmas
A snowman and a snow hut (kamakura)

Let’s make a cozy, cute snowman and a kamakura (snow hut)! First, how to make the snowman.

Fold the paper in half diagonally twice to make creases, then open it.

Fold the bottom corner up toward the center and open it again, then fold the bottom corner up as if tucking it in.

Flip it over and fold three corners toward the center.

Also fold the two colored corners toward the center.

On the bottom, fold both ends inward toward the center, leaving a small gap at the middle.

Following the creases, fold up from the bottom, then fold it back down leaving about a 1 cm step.

Open the pockets on both sides diagonally.

Finally, tuck in the corners to shape it like a snowman, and it’s done.

Next, the kamakura.

Fold the paper in half into a square twice to make creases, then open it.

Fold the top and bottom edges toward the center line.

Open it, then fold up about 1 cm along the bottom.

Fold up the left and right corners.

Fold the top edge up toward the triangular crease lines and round off the corners.

Your kamakura is complete!

ogre’s iron club

[Setsubun Origami] Easy Oni's Club with One Sheet ✨ How to make a paper spiked club #dokkaebi #oni #club #bangmangi #Setsubun #howtofold #origami #paper #easy #diy
ogre's iron club

It’s even a proverb! Let me introduce how to make an ogre’s kanabō (spiked club) out of origami.

You’ll need black or gray origami paper, a black pen, and a white pen.

How about making a kanabō—famous from the proverb “oni ni kanabō” (like giving a kanabō to a demon)—with origami? The steps are simple and easy to follow.

After you finish, drawing a spiky pattern with the pens will make it look even more like a real kanabō, so I recommend it.

It also looks great displayed together with Setsubun crafts, like an ogre’s face! Give it a try.

a one-horned ogre

Recommended for Setsubun crafts! Let’s make an oni (demon) face with origami.

First, fold the paper into a triangle to make a crease.

Open it back up, then fold the two left edges in to meet the crease.

Once you’ve done that, rotate the paper so the folded left side is at the bottom, and flip it over.

Next, fold the top corner down about 2 cm, then fold it back up so the tip aligns with the base of the triangle you just made.

This will be the oni’s hair.

Flip the paper over again, fold the bottom corner up to create the horns on the head.

Then fold the left and right corners inward so they line up with the sides of the part you folded up, and fold the bottom corner as well to shape the face.

Your oni is complete!

For Setsubun! Oni (demon) bean holder

Here’s how to make an ogre bean holder.

First, fold the origami paper into a triangle twice.

Then unfold it once, and fold up the left and right corners to make a tulip shape.

From here, we’ll make the ogre’s horns.

Unfold the parts you just folded up, then make the diagonal creases into mountain folds and the straight creases into valley folds, and collapse along the creases.

The collapsed part should become a diamond shape; fold the top two edges inward along the valley creases to make it narrower.

Do the same on the other side to complete the horns.

Next, take the top corner of the remaining triangle, fold both layers downward together, and tuck the back layer inside the origami.

Fold the front layer back up to represent the ogre’s hair.

Finally, fold the bottom corner up into a triangle and draw the face to finish.

When using it, gently open it so that the part you folded last becomes the bottom!

The hearts pop out! Let me introduce a three-dimensional origami piece.

It may look difficult to make, but once you score the folds, all that’s left is to collapse it—so kids can try it too! Once your origami paper is ready, fold it in half both ways to make a square and create a cross-shaped crease.

Open the paper back up, then bring the bottom edge up to the center crease and press only the middle with your finger to make a small crease.

Next, align the bottom edge with this new crease and make another small crease the same way.

Repeat this process on the top edge as well.

From here, we’ll move on to collapsing: first, fold the top and bottom edges along the outermost creases.

Don’t fold the entire length—press only at the center—and then fold the paper in half so the creases line up.

At this point, you should see hearts on both sides.

Next, rotate and fold it in half so the hearts sit side by side.

Glue them together so they don’t come apart, and you’re done!
