The time I spent happily with children—playing piano, singing songs, and doing finger-play—are priceless memories to me. Currently, while raising three children of my own, I work at an after-school day service, engaging with children and providing individualized developmental support. Drawing on my diverse experiences as a childcare worker and as a mother, I hope to express and convey my thoughts through writing.

February is full of unique delights—like Setsubun, Valentine’s Day, and activities that make the most of the cold, such as ice-making—that children look forward to.

However, when it snows or the temperature drops too low, there will be more days when you can’t go outside.

So this time, we’re sharing craft ideas perfect for February.

How about making a heart mobile for Valentine’s Day on February 14? You can make a cute mobile by gluing together hearts cut from four stacked sheets of construction paper, or by forming hearts from long, thin strips of origami paper and gluing them together, then attaching them to twine and hanging them from above.

Mobiles are said to nurture children’s vision and curiosity.

By incorporating red and pink colors, heart and ribbon shapes, you can enjoy even more of a Valentine’s atmosphere in your room.

Use sparkly ribbons or chenille stems to make it extra festive—sure to boost any girl’s excitement! Adjust the activity to your class’s age: have them draw pictures, use scissors to cut their favorite shapes, and try different approaches as you create together.
