August 11 has been a national holiday called “Mountain Day” since 2016. It was established to encourage familiarity with mountains and a sense of gratitude for them. The date was chosen because the kanji numeral “八” resembles the shape of a mountain, and “11” looks like trees growing on a mountain.

The longest river in Japan is the Shinano River. It flows through Niigata and Nagano Prefectures and has a total length of about 367 km. In Niigata Prefecture it is called the Shinano River, but once it enters Nagano Prefecture its name changes to the Chikuma River. Incidentally, its basin area is the third largest in Japan.
