The celebration for age 99 is called “Hakuju” (White Longevity). This comes from the idea that if you remove the single stroke for “one” (一) from the character for “hundred” (百), you get the character “white” (白). Therefore, 99, which is one stroke short of a hundred, is honored as Hakuju.
