As it’s defined not as a specific sound, but as a way of building a worldview and aesthetic through visual expression—makeup, fashion, and more—the musical styles vary widely from band to band.

This time, we’ll introduce visual kei bands spanning a wide range of eras.

Shadow KingGARGOYLE

Gargoyle is a band that can be considered a pioneer of the visual kei movement, highly acclaimed in Japan’s hard rock scene.

Formed in Osaka in 1987, they made their major debut on Nippon Columbia in 1993.

While grounded in hard rock and heavy metal, their sound is marked by a unique evolution.

KIBA’s lyrics carry deep, thought-provoking messages, and the music features complex, technically sophisticated arrangements.

With a career spanning over 30 years, Gargoyle has carved out a singular place in Japan’s rock scene and is highly recommended for fans of heavy music.

A visual kei rock band active from 1995 to 2017, known for a distinctive “Doctor Rock” style.

Their striking look features white face paint and lab coats, and their sound blends a wide range of genres including kayō punk, punk rock, and rockabilly.

In 2009, their single “Himegoto” reached No.

1 on the Oricon Weekly Indies chart, and in 2010 they successfully headlined a solo show at Akasaka BLITZ, steadily growing their fan base.

With their unique worldview and musicality, SEX-ANDROID stood out even within the visual kei scene.

Melty loveSHAZNA

The visual kei band SHAZNA, which took Japan by storm in the 1990s, is a trio consisting of IZAM, A・O・I, and NIY.

They made their major-label debut in August 1997 with the single “Melty Love,” which became a big hit.

Drawing attention for their diverse musicality—sweet pop sounds, new wave–inspired ethereal arrangements, and programming-driven tracks that incorporate dance beats—they stood out in the scene.

After reuniting in 2006, they have continued to evolve by welcoming new members and redefining the roles of the existing ones.

They’re a recommended band for anyone who wants to fully savor the appeal of visual kei.

Their frequent new releases, almost every year, showcase a creatively evolving artistry.

They are a distinctive visual-kei band that operates under the concept of five warriors who came from space to protect the peace of Earth.

Rooted in electronic rock, they captivate fans with a unique sound that fuses diverse genres such as punk, EDM, and shoegaze.

It’s also appealing how thoroughly they embody a sentai-hero worldview—calling live shows “patrols” and tours “peacekeeping missions.” They’re highly active both in Japan and abroad, and their intensity is astonishing—they’ve even played over 130 shows in a single year.

Beyond music, they’re passionate about social contributions as well, such as donating toothbrushes to an orphanage in the Philippines, further enhancing the band’s appeal.

Although they went on hiatus in 2003, they made a comeback in 2009.

Since then, they have been more active than ever, including performing at the Nippon Budokan.

The band’s leader, Ao Sakurai, draws inspiration from a wide range of artists, including Yosui Inoue and Southern All Stars, which fuels their originality.

They’re the perfect band for those drawn to grotesque expression and underground culture.
