One of the cultures Japan is proud to share with the world! Recommended visual kei bands
Said to have originated from X JAPAN’s BLUE BLOOD album tagline, “PSYCHEDELIC VIOLENCE CRIME OF VISUAL SHOCK,” visual kei has now become a hallmark of Japanese culture.
As it’s defined not as a specific sound, but as a way of building a worldview and aesthetic through visual expression—makeup, fashion, and more—the musical styles vary widely from band to band.
This time, we’ll introduce visual kei bands spanning a wide range of eras.

Incomplete catharsisAnima

They’re a visual kei band based in Fukuoka, but the quality of their videos and songs shows a level of taste that you wouldn’t expect from a local band.
Their choruses are always catchy and easy to remember, making you want to sing them at karaoke.
Regret LoveBLESSCODE

The song starts with a very catchy whisper voice, but when the intro kicks in it suddenly turns hard—a track that will definitely get the crowd hyped at a live show.
They’re a band from Hiroshima Prefecture, and I recommend them for their vocal melodies, which are catchy yet tinged with a bit of sadness.
BLASTED ANIMALSBORN

I think this is one of BORN’s most approachable songs.
It feels like the kind of song you’d want to give to someone important to you.
It’s not exactly an upbeat song, but for some reason it makes me feel positive when I listen to it.
BORN disbanded this May, and I regret not having listened to them sooner.
Still, I’m really glad I got to experience the atmosphere of their live show at an event live in March this year.
TomorrowlandCLØWD

While the visual kei scene is dominated by bands with hard-edged tracks, this band is drawing attention with high-quality songs on par with major-label acts.
They began activities in 2015, and the music video for this track was filmed in Odaiba, making it a perfect visual fit for a group on the verge of their next big break.

BIRTHD

This piece has a very striking violin melody.
It was the first D song I ever heard, and I thought it sounded fantastical.
The title of the piece means “birth,” but I feel the theme might carry the sense of “being reborn.”

DIR EN GREY, which has now grown into a globally recognized band.
In 1998, their indie single “-I’ll-” reached No.
7 on the Oricon Singles Chart.
With X JAPAN’s YOSHIKI as producer, they made their major-label debut in January 1999.
Starting with the 2003 album “VULGAR,” they shifted significantly toward heavy rock and began charting overseas.
Since 2005, they have been highly active internationally and have become one of the most well-known Japanese bands in the world.
Their fierce songs and extreme live performances are nothing short of overwhelming.
DearestDaizyStripper

I think this song is one that really makes you feel positive.
When I’m unsure about something, I feel like listening to it together with my cherished family and friends.
It’s very easy to listen to and has a fresh, breezy feel.
I only found out about this band recently, but the event live show I went to last year made me like them even more.
I want to discover more of their songs and grow to love this band even more from now on.
