It’s a relay-style competition where participants run toward the finish line while rolling a giant ball.
In the past, these giant balls were apparently made using bamboo or wire, but recently vinyl versions have become mainstream because they’re durable and safe even if someone climbs onto them.
In this article, we’ll share ideas for making your own giant ball.
We’ve gathered methods for building one from scratch, as well as cute ways to customize store-bought balls and design suggestions, so if you’re thinking of making one yourself, feel free to use this as a reference.

[Sports Day] DIY Ideas for Rolling a Giant Ball (1–10)
Wammy’s Giant Ball Rolling

Do you know Wammy? It’s pronounced “wah-mee,” and it’s a type of block with a fresh, new feel.
Unlike hard blocks, Wammy is a toy made from a slightly soft material that you can bend.
It might be fun to try making a large ball using Wammy.
If you combine lots of pieces, you can make a fairly big ball.
However, making something large enough for students can be quite difficult, so it might be better to make one for an indoor sports day for young children.
There are also durability concerns, so if you use it for a ball-rolling game, be sure to compete with care.
Rolling a giant cardboard soccer ball

Here’s an idea for making a large soccer ball by combining square cardboard pieces measuring 30 centimeters on each side.
Arrange the square-cut cardboard so that they form a pentagon, and fasten the overlapping corners.
Consider this the bottom of the ball, and continue attaching cardboard in the same way to build up a sphere.
If you wrap the outside with sturdy paper and add color, I think it could even be used as a giant ball for a sports day.
However, since a hollow interior might cause it to collapse, I recommend adding strength by stuffing it with something soft and lightweight or by running rod-like supports throughout.
Minions’ Giant Ball Rolling
“We want to make the giant ball-rolling race cuter and more festive…” In that case, how about transforming the big ball into a Minion? It’s simple to make: just draw a Minion’s eyes, mouth, and signature goggles on the ball.
You can draw directly on the ball with a marker, or use vinyl tape and other materials to decorate it.
Since each Minion has a different face and features, you can create several Minions using just yellow balls.
[Sports Day] DIY Ideas for the Giant Ball Roll (11–20)
American flag giant ball rolling
How about making a giant ball inspired by the American flag? Similar designs are sold as beach balls at well-known supermarkets, and that flag’s design is really lovely.
Let’s borrow that idea and make a giant ball.
You can color an existing ball or attach fabric or paper to create the design—both work! Besides the U.S., it’s also fun for each team to make a giant ball featuring the flag of a favorite country, like France, China, or Australia.
It’s sure to make the sports day feel bright and festive!
Anpanman Giant Ball Rolling
Anpanman is a popular character everyone knows.
How about turning his face into a giant ball? Even if you’re not good at drawing, Anpanman’s face is simple and easy to sketch, so it’s great for incorporating without stress.
With a few tweaks to a store-bought large ball, you can significantly boost children’s interest and sense of familiarity, which should increase their motivation to take part in the sports day.
A big Anpanman face will also look fantastic in photos! Use this as a reference and give it a try.
Giant soccer ball rolling
How about making a giant ball modeled after a soccer ball for soccer powerhouses, soccer clubs, or teams that love soccer? You can easily make one by taking an existing large ball and painting it in soccer-ball colors or sticking on paper in the same color scheme.
Besides soccer balls, you can match the design to your club: a baseball pattern for the baseball team, or a basketball pattern for the basketball team.
That way, when you hold inter-club competitions, it’s easy to tell which team belongs to which club at a glance.
Give it a try!
Jack-o’-lantern giant ball rolling
When your sports day is likely to overlap with Halloween season, this giant Jack-o’-lantern ball is a must-add! It’s super easy to make: just take a store-bought inflatable jumbo ball and stick on a Jack-o’-lantern face cut out of construction paper—that’s it! It has a big visual impact and looks great in photos, too.
Combining the sports day with a seasonal event lifts everyone’s spirits and will surely create unforgettable memories.
Use this as inspiration and give it a try!
