[DIY] Handmade Greenhouse Ideas Collection [Vinyl/Plastic Tunnel]
If you’ve come here, you’re probably a farmer or someone with a home garden who’s considering installing a plastic greenhouse.
It’s essential equipment for dealing with rain and for shutting out outside air to protect your crops from the cold.
In this article, we’ll introduce DIY plastic greenhouse ideas!
It’s perfect if you’re thinking, “I don’t have much budget,” “I want something that fits my space perfectly,” or “If I’m doing it, I want to DIY.”
We’ve got options you can use on a balcony or indoors, as well as greenhouse-style setups, so be sure to use this as a reference!

4-tier narrow greenhouse

When you think of greenhouses, you probably picture the large ones set up in fields.
But some of you may want to build one in your yard or a small space.
In that case, how about making a slim, four-tier shelf greenhouse? This greenhouse is 3 meters wide, 1.7 meters tall, and 40 centimeters deep.
Basically, you create a frame with poles and cover it with insect netting and plastic sheeting.
The shelf sections are designed to hold baskets, but if you want to place pots directly, it’s a good idea to put boards on top.
100-yen shop net greenhouse

Let’s try making a greenhouse using wire mesh panels and bubble wrap.
First, connect the mesh panels with zip ties to create the frame.
Assemble it like you’re making a mini-sized cubby or color box.
Once the frame is done, cover the outside with bubble wrap.
For the front, attach a wire mesh panel covered with a longer piece of bubble wrap to create a door that can open and close.
Since it’s lightweight, you can easily move it to wherever you want.
If you place it on a balcony, add some weights to prevent it from tipping over.
retractable greenhouse (with an open/close mechanism)

Here’s an idea for a retractable greenhouse.
By “retractable,” I mean you build a framed greenhouse that you can place over your garden bed and open and close like a lid.
Since it won’t open if it’s too large, make it small and light enough to lift with one hand.
First, secure a wooden base to the garden bed, then attach the hinged frame on top.
Build the greenhouse frame using cut PVC pipes.
Fix the frame to the base, cover it with plastic sheeting, and you’re done!
Single-pipe vinyl greenhouse

Why not try building a full-fledged greenhouse using single pipes? This can be quite difficult to do alone, so it might be better to work together with a few people.
Basically, you’ll build the greenhouse frame with single pipes.
The posts need to be firmly secured in the ground, so use a spiral auger or similar tool to dig holes before inserting them.
For the roof, you’ll lift triangular pipe sections into place, so work carefully to avoid injury.
Once you’ve strung rope across the frame and stretched the plastic sheeting, you’re done.
300-yen vinyl greenhouse

Let me share an idea for a greenhouse you can make using items from a 100-yen shop.
Amazingly, the total cost is just 300 yen! The items used are two hopping bags and one vacuum storage bag for bedding.
The method is simple: just place the hopping bags side by side, laid down, inside the vacuum bag.
The hopping bags act as insect netting, and the vacuum bag substitutes for the plastic cover.
One important note: do not seal the bag completely.
It’s fine to close the vacuum bag’s clip, but be sure to leave an air hole.
Also, if you use it outdoors, put a weight inside so it doesn’t blow away in the wind.
vinyl tunnel

A vinyl tunnel refers to the plastic sheeting that covers the planting beds (ridges).
It has the benefits of high heat retention and protecting vegetables from rain and wind, and it’s also said to be suitable for pesticide-free cultivation.
Once you’ve made the beds, insert arch-shaped supports at roughly 50 cm intervals.
Basically, insert them straight down from top to bottom, but angle the two end supports outward so they lean slightly.
After that, drape the plastic over the supports and you’re done.
Since you’ll twist and secure the plastic at both ends, make sure to use a sheet longer than the bed.
Greenhouse made of bamboo

Why not try building a greenhouse with bamboo? Many people might think getting bamboo is difficult, but if you go during felling time, it’s often available for free.
Push bamboo into the ground to form hoops, then wrap hemp twine around them to create the frame.
Once the frame is done, wrap it with plastic sheeting.
The size of the greenhouse is up to you, but the larger it is, the more plastic you’ll need, and it can make quite a noise when the wind blows.
To reduce that, this idea puts a net over the plastic.
If you’re sensitive to noise, give it a try.
