Some of you might be wondering, “Who is Waniyama-san?” Waniyama-san is the character who appears on the packaging of Chocobi, the snack that Shin-chan, the protagonist of the anime Crayon Shin-chan, loves.
This time, let’s make a Waniyama-san patch out of felt.
It’s easy: just cut the parts out of felt and sew them onto the base! You’ll mainly use a whip stitch, and use backstitch for the eyes and mouth.
[Embroidery] Initial

Name patches are so handy because when you attach them to a bag or other items, it’s immediately clear they’re yours.
But many people feel hesitant about using their full name since it’s personal information.
So why not make an initial patch instead? This idea is not only just the initial—it’s extra cute with a little animal perched on top.
To make it, use a template to trace the initial and the animal onto the base fabric, then embroider over it with your favorite threads.
It’s beginner-friendly, so even if it’s your first time doing embroidery, please give it a try!
[Embroidery] Fluffy Bear

Let’s make a fluffy, cute, puffy bear patch.
This idea uses embroidery.
After drawing the bear outline on the base fabric, start by stitching the outline with backstitch.
Next, use satin stitch for the nose and the area around it, and French knots for the eyes.
Then work the face area in Smyrna stitch.
This is the part that becomes fluffy.
Once the face is done, cut the loops with scissors and neaten the shape.
Trim off the excess base fabric, overcast stitch all around the edge, and you’re done.
[Felt] Baikinman

Would you like to make a Baikinman patch featuring the beloved Anpanman character that toddlers adore? This version is made from felt: cut out the parts according to the pattern and sew them together.
Felt is also sold at 100-yen shops, so take a look there if you don’t have a craft store nearby.
For Baikinman, use black, white, and purple felt.
By changing the shape of the eyes, you can create Baikinman with different expressions—smiling, winking, and more.
[Felt] Mario’s Mushroom

Beloved across generations, the Super Mario series.
This “mushroom” is the mushroom that appears in Mario’s world.
When you eat it, your body gets bigger, right? Let’s try making a handmade patch of that mushroom! First, cut out the parts from felt.
Sew them onto the base to form the shape of the mushroom, then attach the eyes.
Adding the little white highlights in the pupils makes it even cuter.
While red and green are the classic colors for Mario’s mushrooms, it could be adorable to choose colors that match the spot where you’ll put the patch.
[Felt] Anpanman

Let’s try making an Anpanman patch by hand.
Instead of embroidery, you’ll layer and sew felt pieces together, making it easy even for beginners at sewing.
First, draw an Anpanman sketch, then cut the parts from felt to match it: the face base, the nose and cheeks, and the eye pieces.
Temporarily fix the parts onto the base with embroidery adhesive before sewing.
Only the mouth and eyebrows are embroidered, though you can draw them with a black pen if you prefer.
Once the face is complete, sew it onto the patch base and you’re done!
[Felt] Pikachu

Pokémon is popular with a wide range of people, from young children to adults.
Among the Pokémon that appear in the series, Pikachu is especially well-known.
Its yellow body and jagged tail are its trademarks.
This idea is to make a Pikachu patch out of felt.
Basically, you cut the parts from felt and sew them onto a base.
You might think Pikachu is entirely yellow, but be careful—the tips of its ears and the base of its tail are different colors.
Even those who aren’t confident with embroidery can give this a try, so if you like Pikachu, please make one!
