Simple Crafts for Beginners (1–10)
Chick-chan Mascot

Let’s make a chick mascot with adorable, round eyes! Using yellow felt, create a template with a compass and cut out four leaf-shaped pieces.
On one piece, draw the eyes and beak, then stitch them with embroidery thread.
Once the eyes and beak are sewn, align it with the other felt pieces and join them using an overcast stitch.
When you’ve sewn about halfway around the last piece, stuff it with filling.
After adding the stuffing, sew it closed to the end, and it’s complete.
Name tag

Name tags are perfect when you want to try your hand at embroidery.
A name tag is a tag with your own name on it.
Attaching it to your belongings reduces the risk of losing them or mixing them up with someone else’s.
To get started, prepare some bag tape and use a design template to write your name in the alphabet on it.
Then simply embroider along the letters to finish.
It’s cute enough as is, but adding a small mark or motif as an accent makes it even nicer.
Teacup bookmarker

A perfect little accessory for anyone who loves reading: a cute teacup-shaped bookmark made of felt.
Start by creating templates for the teacup and the teabag.
The materials you’ll need are felt, a thin ribbon or cord, and embroidery thread.
Since each piece is small, you can likely make it using leftover felt scraps you already have at home.
Once you cut the felt according to the templates, all that’s left is to sew the pieces together.
The finer details might be a bit tricky, but taking it slow will be just fine.
It would also make a lovely gift.
bicolor tassel

How about trying to make a bi-color tassel? A tassel is an ornament made by bundling threads or finely cut leather.
You often see them on cushions and leather shoes.
This time, we’ll make a tassel using two colors of embroidery thread.
Choosing which colors to use with a sense of excitement is part of the fun.
By the way, adding larger beads will give it a more refined look.
Pick beads that match your color scheme and enjoy the selection process, too.
Felt ice cream

A cute ice cream mascot made of felt—wouldn’t it be adorable in lots of different colors? The materials you need are felt, embroidery thread, beads, stuffing, cardstock, and wood glue.
Just make a pattern, cut the felt in each color, and sew the pieces together.
For the ice cream toppings, sew on beads, and for the popsicle stick part, insert a piece of cardstock inside before sewing it up.
A bunch of colorful ice creams look cute just lined up, and they’d also be adorable as brooches if you attach a pin!
Chouchou (finger knitting)

A scrunchie that’s cute as a hair accessory and even when wrapped around your wrist.
This adorable yarn scrunchie—cute enough to look like something from a boutique—can be made very easily with finger knitting! All you need is a base hair elastic and some yarn.
Even without knitting needles, you can smoothly knit it using just your fingers.
Wrap the yarn around the hair elastic to form a loop, then pass the yarn through that loop—simply repeat what would be a “chain stitch” in crochet using your fingers.
It’s so easy that you’ll want to make lots with different yarns—perfect for making matching ones with friends, too.
ribbon scrunchie

Scrunchies that can also be used as bracelets or hair ties are great for creating a cute or elegant look! Here’s an easy, no-sew way to make one by simply cutting and tying ribbon.
The materials—your favorite ribbon and a hair elastic ring—can all be found at a 100-yen shop.
To make it, prepare several pieces of ribbon cut to 12–13 cm.
Applying fray-preventing liquid to both ends of the ribbon will help keep them from fraying and make them more durable.
Once the ribbons are dry, tie them onto the elastic ring, and you’re done! Even tying each ribbon only halfway gives plenty of volume, so adjust the number of ribbons to your liking.
Felt magnet

At first glance, it looks like a cute felt mascot…
but actually, it has a magnet inside so it sticks firmly to a fridge or other metal surfaces! Many households use magnets on the fridge to hold important papers.
Let’s make a felt mascot that’s practical too! It’s very easy: cut felt into your favorite shapes or characters, place two pieces together (front and back) and sew around the edges, glue a magnet inside, stuff it with cotton, then sew up the remaining opening—and you’re done! Try making lots with your favorite characters!
tissue case

This is a tissue case for pocket tissues that you can make even without a sewing machine, using only simple straight stitches.
Fold the edge that will be the case opening into a triple fold and sew a running stitch.
You don’t need to take out the iron—just fold it with your fingers and press a firm crease with your nail.
Once both ends are sewn, turn the fabric right sides together and sew the two ends, and your tissue case is complete! Bringing tissues to school is more fun when the tissue case is cute and one of your favorites—it really lifts your mood.
Hairband (finger knitting)

There are probably many people who feel that knitting is a bit of a high hurdle.
It can be especially tricky for kids’ crafts, depending on what you’re making.
In that case, why not try finger knitting to make a headband? As the name suggests, finger knitting uses no needles at all—you knit using only your fingers.
Prepare slightly thicker yarn, loop it back and forth around your fingers, and hook the strands alternately; before you know it, you’ll have a tube.
Connect the two ends of the tube, and you’ve got an easy headband! Once you learn the technique, you can make all kinds of things.
