[Tissue Paper] Fluffy Kagami Mochi
![[Tissue Paper] Fluffy Kagami Mochi](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/LWJooIfi_Hc/sddefault.jpg)
You can make it just by crumpling and sticking tissue paper! Here’s a kagami mochi craft that even 1-year-olds can enjoy making.
What you’ll need: a base sheet, colored construction paper, glue, white tissue paper, crayons, and a mandarin orange decoration made from construction paper.
First, glue a paper sanpo (the traditional stand) onto the base sheet.
Next, tear the white tissue paper into strips, spread glue on the base, then crumple the tissue paper and stick it down to form the mochi shape.
Finally, glue on the pre-made mandarin orange, draw a face with crayons, and you’re done! Using round stickers for the eyes is also recommended.
Give it a try for New Year’s!
Handprint Kadomatsu Ema
How about making ema plaques decorated with handprints that even 0-year-olds can take part in? Imagine the children’s handprints as kadomatsu and turn them into fun, pop-style ema! First, trace the children’s hands onto paper and cut around the outlines.
Next, create the kadomatsu section by attaching a base and adding decorations.
Finally, glue the kadomatsu onto a piece of construction paper cut into an ema shape, and finish by adding square-cut pieces of origami or chiyogami to the empty spaces.
The meaning of kadomatsu might be a bit difficult, but seeing the festive New Year decorations is sure to lift everyone’s spirits.
[Tissue Paper] Daruma Ornament
We’ll show you how to make a cute daruma using a plastic cup! You’ll need orange construction paper, double-sided tape, face parts made from round stickers or paper, a plastic cup, wood glue, tissue paper, gold origami paper for the base, and chiyogami (patterned paper).
First, crumple the tissue paper and stuff it into the plastic cup.
Next, glue colored construction paper over the cup’s opening with wood glue and trim it into a circle.
Attach the facial parts with double-sided tape.
Add the belly decoration using the gold origami paper.
Make a base by layering the gold origami and chiyogami slightly offset, place the daruma on top, and you’re done!
lion dance

Here’s a cute shishimai (lion dance) craft idea that’s perfect for January wall decorations.
You can also enjoy making stamps using toilet paper rolls, so try it with your two-year-olds! First, cut open a paper roll, curl it, and secure it with a rubber band to make a stamp.
Next, create the shishimai’s body with green construction paper, dip the paper-roll stamp in paint, and add patterns.
Also, make the shishimai’s face by cutting colored construction paper, then combine it with the body to finish! If you’re decorating a wall, tearing gold and silver origami paper and placing it around the piece will give it a festive touch.
Daruma

Daruma dolls are often displayed as New Year’s decorations or ornaments to celebrate the new year.
Let’s try making a daruma together with children, since it’s a beloved good-luck item.
Once you prepare construction paper cut into a daruma silhouette, the rest is simply letting the kids draw freely.
They can enjoy various ideas, such as drawing with crayons or sticking on stickers.
It’s also recommended to make it even more festive by adding decorations like eye stickers or chenille stems (pipe cleaners).
First calligraphy-style creation

Why not try a New Year’s first-calligraphy activity using black paint, which we don’t often get to use? It’s perfect for 1-year-olds’ crafts.
First, dip the brush in water and then apply black paint just to the tip.
The key is to keep it light and diluted.
Let the child paint freely with the brush on white drawing paper.
Next, have the child choose a colored sheet of paper they like to use as a backing.
You can also stick on a pre-made name tag in the shape of the zodiac animal to make it extra cute.
Glue the drawing onto the backing paper, and it’s done!

The feeling of stamping is so fun! Here’s a winter food craft idea.
Cut construction paper into a pot shape and glue it onto white paper.
Then add brown tofu pouches, white eggs, and brown daikon radish.
Draw patterns on the daikon and tofu pouches with crayons.
Dab black paint onto a textured sponge and stamp it onto gray paper.
Cut it into triangles, and you’ve made konnyaku! Put the konnyaku in the pot and your oden is complete! Enjoy chatting while you craft, asking questions like, “What oden ingredients do you like?” and “What was in it again?”
