[Childcare] Collection of Daruma Craft Ideas: Fun Projects Using Everyday Materials

When it comes to January activities in childcare, making crafts with lucky daruma dolls is a must! Using familiar materials like paper plates, origami paper, and milk cartons, there are plenty of ideas that even two-year-olds can enjoy.

Children can create patterns with torn-paper collage or decalcomania, turn their creations into spinning tops or maracas to play with, or make daruma that gently wobble like roly-poly toys.

Why not enjoy the process of making them and share the joy of playing with the finished pieces together with the children? Here, we’ll introduce lots of ideas for unique, personality-filled daruma crafts! Because the children’s creations are treated as art pieces, we use the term “seisaku” (制作, creation/artwork) in the text.

Fun with black construction paper! Making snowmen

https://www.tiktok.com/@hekimen_25/video/7312804209915694354

Here’s a craft idea: paint a snowman with white paint on black construction paper, then finish by adding a paper bucket and mittens, plus face stickers.

For the snowman, draw a circular outline and fill it in with paint.

Because it’s surprisingly hard not to paint outside the lines, if infants are doing this activity, it’s better to either prepare pre-painted pieces or have an adult cut a snowman shape from the child’s white-painted paper and glue it onto the background.

If you put double-sided tape on the back of the bucket and mittens, kids can use them like stickers, making them easier for little hands to handle.

Once the snowman is done, use cotton swab stamping to add a snowy landscape in the empty space to complete the project.

Cute wobbly daruma doll

Cute wobbly daruma doll

Let’s make a cute daruma that wobbles when you poke it.

You’ll need a paper plate, construction paper, and a pen.

Please prepare construction paper in four colors for the body, face, eyes, and decorations.

First, cut the body piece of construction paper into a circle to match the size of the paper plate.

Next, cut an oval from the face-colored paper, and cut two small circles from the eye-colored paper.

Glue them in order—body, face, then eyes—and draw the pupils with the pen.

Then cut three ovals from the decorative paper and stick them below the face.

Fold the paper plate in half and attach the daruma to one side—that’s it! If you’re making this with small children, adults should prepare the parts in advance.

Let’s roll and make a snowman!

[January - Craft Activity] Crumple-and-Tear Snowman ☃
Let’s roll and make a snowman!

Crumpling tissue paper and sticking on stickers is so much fun! How about making a snowman craft that’s perfect for winter? First, have the children crumple white tissue paper into balls in whatever size they like.

You’ll also use tissue paper torn into strips; if that step is tricky, an adult can prepare it in advance.

Put the crumpled tissue paper and the torn strips together into a clear plastic bag, then shape it into an oval.

Tie the middle with a chenille stem (pipe cleaner) to form a snowman shape.

Use round stickers for the face, make a bucket hat from construction paper, and attach it with double-sided tape.

If you want to hang it, punch a hole in the bucket, and thread a string through.

How to make a fun Fukuwarai

How to make a fun Fukuwarai

Here’s a craft idea for “Fukuwarai,” a traditional New Year’s game.

This version uses a daruma motif, letting you enjoy the game while you make it.

First, glue a daruma body—cut from construction paper—onto a backing sheet.

Then cut out the parts for the eyes, nose, mouth, eyebrows, and cheeks.

Put on a blindfold and enjoy playing Fukuwarai by placing the parts on the face.

Glue the parts where they land, and decorate the empty areas of the backing sheet with flowers.

Finally, use crayons to draw the flower centers and the daruma’s patterns to complete your craft.

Cute bubble-patterned! How to make a daruma doll

Here’s a craft idea using bubble wrap, which is handy as cushioning material.

First, paint the bubble wrap with red paint and transfer the pattern onto red construction paper.

Cut it into a daruma shape with scissors and paste it onto a base.

Add facial features made from construction paper and decorative patterns made from gold origami.

Fill the empty space on the base with flower pieces, and it’s done.

The bubble wrap pattern looks like polka dots and is cute, and the texture makes the daruma appear to pop out.

I think it would also look great in colorful variations.

Paint white ink on your palm and stamp your handprint onto red construction paper! Cut the paper into a daruma shape and draw the face.

Then punch flower shapes out of gold origami paper and stick them on as decorations to finish.

For the face, try dipping your fingertip in black paint and enjoy making finger-stamp features.

If you use a different color for the handprint, it’s best to first make a white paper base for the face and then draw the eyes and mouth.

Create daruma in various colors and expressions to celebrate the New Year!

Let me introduce a craft idea for a horse daruma with an adorable pose of a horse looking up at you.

First, cut four strip-shaped pieces from red construction paper.

Arrange them in a radial pattern, glue them together at the center, then bring all the ends together and glue to form a sphere.

Attach a horse face made from another piece of construction paper to the top of the sphere, place the sphere on a square base, and glue it down to finish.

I’m presenting it as a horse daruma this time, but you can adapt the idea to match each year’s zodiac animal.

You could also add a piece on the base with the characters for “Welcoming the New Year.”
