I don't want to let go.T-BOLAN

It was released in 1991 as T-BOLAN’s second single.

It’s a single cut from their first album, “T-BOLAN,” and this song quickly made the band famous.

It’s a straightforward love song, and as a classic ballad sung with a husky, deep voice, the band remains popular today, especially among men.

If only I had held you tighterWANDS

WANDS is a three-piece rock band named after the Ace of Wands tarot card.

Their 1992 release “Motto Tsuyoku Dakishimetanara” (“If I Could Hold You Tighter”) was used in a Mitsui Life Insurance commercial featuring Atsuko Asano.

The striking guitar in the intro and the catchy chorus melody are addictive.

The lyrics, which depict a cool, stoic man, perfectly suit vocalist Show Uesugi’s emotional voice.

This refreshing rock tune is filled with nostalgia and warmth.

TearsX JAPAN

Tears, written in 1992 by X JAPAN’s drummer YOSHIKI as the theme song for the 43rd NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen, features lyrics filled with his feelings for his father—deeply moving and resonant.

The melodies, crafted by YOSHIKI who is also known as a pianist, gently envelop the listener’s heart.

Toshi’s vocals, with his soaring high tones, are another highlight.

This quintessential ’90s rock ballad will bring you comfort.

Mr.Children is a four-member rock band that has produced numerous million-selling singles and albums and continues to lead the J-pop scene today.

Their 15th single, “Owarinaki Tabi,” was used as the theme song for the TV drama “Naguru Onna” and became a major hit.

The lyrics, which sing of the value of keeping your eyes fixed forward while holding hope for the future, give courage to those who are pursuing their dreams while grappling with hardship.

With its lyrical melody that stirs the heart, it’s a track you’ll want to listen to when you’re on the verge of losing heart.

There’s a word, “emoi” (emo), and for rock fans from the ’90s, this band might fit the bill.

This is “Aosugiru Sora” (Sky Too Blue), a signature track by eastern youth, a three-piece rock band from Hokkaido.

It was released in 1997 as their third single.

A moratorium sung—no, screamed—with such intensity that even the word “passion” falls short… and it’s insanely cool.

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to introduce it as one of the songs that had a major influence on later rock bands.

It was released in 1992 as Unicorn’s eighth single.

The lyrics and music were written by Tamio Okuda, and the concept is a song you can listen to not only at Christmas but all the way through the end of the year.

Okuda’s distinctive vocals make it a soothing track.

GLORIAZIGGY

Some of you may have heard their songs in variety shows or commercials from the ’90s.

If you like straightforward rock ’n’ roll or melodic kayōkyoku-style pop, I recommend “GLORIA.” It was released by the rock band ZIGGY in 1998 and was used as the theme song for the drama Dō-kyū-sei (Classmates).

The performance delivers an intense rock sound, while the lyrics and melody evoke the feel of kayōkyoku.

It’s said that vocalist Juichi Morishige’s fondness for kayōkyoku during his youth also had an influence.

If you’re in the mood for a nostalgic melody that will get you pumped, give it a listen.
