[Childcare] Sports Day activity ideas. Let’s make the Sports Day exciting!

Sports days at nursery schools and kindergartens are important events where everyone can see how the children are growing!

By preparing fun activities, you can create a sports day that both children and adults will enjoy.

Here, we’ll introduce a variety of events: those done cooperatively as a class, activities for younger children, and games that parents and children can participate in together!

All of them are ideas that motivate children and allow guardians to feel their children’s development.

Use these as a reference to tailor activities to the children and create a fun and engaging sports day!

color guard

Color guard performances, where large, colorful flags are waved, are dazzling and cool, aren’t they? They’re included as part of marching ensembles and, in Japan, are also used by the Self-Defense Forces and police bands.

Although there are many challenging movements—like children working hard to carry heavy, oversized flags while changing formations, or coordinating to swing the flags into various shapes—you can really see how much they’ve grown through their efforts.

Color guard has a kind of splendor that’s different from dance or group gymnastics, so it’s enjoyable not only for the children who actually wave the flags, but also for audiences like their parents.

Dancing Tamaire

Sports day: doing the Pocky dance in the middle of the ball-toss game, lol!
Dancing Tamaire

Dancing Tamaire is a fun event that combines tamaire (ball toss) with dancing! At first it seems like a regular tamaire, but the moment a whistle blows—beep!—everyone starts dancing to the music.

Just when you think, “Huh? Is this dance time, not tamaire?” another whistle signals the ball toss to resume! It’s a fresh twist that both spectators and participants can enjoy, so it’s highly recommended.

Borrowed Item Race

The borrowing race held at daycare centers and kindergartens starts like a footrace.

It can be done individually, but pairing up works well because the younger children are small, and the older children can take the lead.

Have the older child take the younger child by the hand and guide them to the table where the prompts for the items to borrow are written.

The older child can tell the younger child what the prompt says, and the two can search together.

You can prepare the prompts on sheets, or you might plant them with parents in the audience.

It’s an event that gets the whole venue excited and having fun.

Firefighter race

2015-10-10 Sports Day. Chie Parent–Child Event: “Fire! Mobilize!”
Firefighter race

The Firefighter Race is an event combining athletics and obstacles that parents and children can enjoy together.

You ride in a cardboard fire truck, and the goal is to put out the fire at the end! Just like playing “train,” the parent and child get into the fire truck and head out on a mission.

There are lots of things to prepare in advance—not just the fire truck, but also the burning building and the flames—but that’s exactly why the kids get super excited and have a great time!

Errand Race

Errand Race

A “shopping errand race” that incorporates elements of make-believe should feel like a natural extension of play.

In this event, participants pick up a shopping basket and a card listing their target items along the course, then return with the specified items in the basket.

Place the cards face down.

That way, luck plays a bigger role and the outcome is less predictable.

Think carefully about what to set as the prompts.

You could also unify the theme, such as “vegetables” or “snacks.”

Animal Race

Animal Race

Animal races are great for energetic two-year-olds! Pick an animal as the theme and have everyone race to the finish while imitating it.

Tigers, penguins, giraffes—anything goes! Four-legged animals can be tricky, but penguins have especially cute movements.

The free, natural way kids move is so childlike and charming.

obstacle course

When it comes to school sports days, obstacle races are a classic! Balance beams, crawling under nets, vaulting boxes—anything goes.

It’s popular because you can adjust the distance and obstacles by age and freely design the course.

Kids who are fast runners, those who enjoy detailed tasks, and those with great balance can all shine in their own ways.

You can even add a mental element, like drawing cards to give challenges.

In conclusion

We introduced fun event ideas to brighten nursery and kindergarten sports days.

From dances and relays to parachute games, each activity is a wonderful program where children’s smiles shine.

By choosing and adapting events to suit ages and personalities, you can bring out the unique character of your school even more.

Let’s create a heartwarming sports day where we can watch children take on challenges and grow.
