[For Kids] Craft Ideas Using Bread Bag Closures

Do you know what a bag closure is?

It’s actually the name of the little fastener used to seal bread bags—something everyone has seen.

Bag closures are often repurposed to bundle name tags or cords, but they’re also used as materials for children’s independent research projects and educational toys.

So this time, we’re introducing craft ideas that use bag closures.

From art pieces and playable games to wearable accessories, we’ve got a wealth of unique and amusing ideas that will make you say, “You can make that, too?”

Everything can be made with familiar, easily found materials, so be sure to try making them with your kids!

[For Kids] Craft Ideas Using Bag Closures (1–10)

Trains and the Shinkansen

This is a craft piece that recreates the pantograph on top of a train using a bag clip! Since bag clips can be threaded with string and the like, it’s a clever use of the material.

Just make your favorite train or Shinkansen out of construction paper and attach a bag clip to the top.

Add some tracks and display it in your room, and it’s also great for a science project or independent study.

Many children love trains, so teaching them this craft would likely make them very happy.

Fishing game

How about pretending bag closures are fish and trying a fishing game? Once you collect a bunch of bag closures, draw fish on them with markers! If you make and attach tail fins, they’ll look even more like fish.

For the fishing rod, tie twine to a pair of chopsticks and attach a piece of wire to the tip—done! It’s an easy craft that kids can tackle, making it perfect for an independent research project.

And after you’ve made it, you can enjoy a fishing game with family and friends!

Twisty Spin Stick

The “Kurukuru Spin Rod” is a fun toy where a bag closure twirls around and drops.

It’s easy to make with materials you have at home, so how about it for a parent-child craft project? Just pack some clay into a plastic bottle cap and insert a chopstick wrapped with wire—that’s it.

If you decorate the bag closure with stickers and such, it will look pretty as it spins.

Since the clay part can sometimes crack, you can mix in glue or similar adhesive to increase its strength.

[For Kids] Craft Ideas Using Bag Closures (11–20)

dinosaur

A handmade dinosaur using bag closures is especially recommended for kids who love dinosaurs! You can recreate a dinosaur’s skeleton in a pretty convincing way.

The trick is to combine the bag closures to match each part of the skeleton—using them as-is or cutting them as needed.

You’ll need a lot of bag closures, so don’t throw them away after breakfast if you have bread—start collecting them.

If you use this as a science project, you might even become the star of your class!

cat

This is a cat made by folding a bag closure clip in half! The curved tail gives it an adorable finish.

It’s a craft that’s especially recommended for kids who love cats, so give it a try.

When bending the bag closure, be careful not to injure your fingers.

You might want to protect your hands with work gloves.

After bending it, use a pen to draw your own unique cat! There are many cat patterns—black cats, calicos, spotted cats, and more—so coloring it in is lots of fun.

Bag Closure Art

If you eat sliced bread every morning, you’re bound to accumulate a lot of bag closures! It would be a waste to throw them away—why not use them for art? You often see white or light blue ones, so artwork that makes the most of their original colors can look great.

Occasionally finding different colors mixed in adds a nice little accent, so it’s best to keep them instead of tossing them.

It takes a bit of effort, but if you paint each one with acrylics or other paints, the creative possibilities expand even more.

If your child wants to make a big project, a long school break is the perfect time to give it a try.

Illustration using a bag closure

Let’s make a bag clip part of your illustration! This is a great craft for kids who love to draw.

As you draw, imagine how the bag clip could become part of the picture! The hole in the center might look like a face, the clip itself might look like a hood, or it might become part of an animal—coming up with different ideas and imagining possibilities is so much fun.

You can also decorate or color the bag clip itself.

Since this craft nurtures children’s creativity and imagination, we can’t wait to see what wonderful works they come up with!
