Christmas Songs: Christmas Tunes to Sing with Kids (1–10)
Silent NightComposer: Franz Xaver Gruber
Lyrics by Joseph Mohr
Japanese lyrics translation: Yasushi Yugi

This is a Christmas carol everyone has heard at least once, and it’s designated as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in Austria.
The original lyrics are in German, and in Japan it’s known with lyrics by Yasushi Yugi.
Christmas is typically associated with a lively atmosphere, but I think it’s lovely to sing this calm, quiet song and feel a sacred mood.
It’s also popular in Japan as a lullaby, so be sure to sing it on Christmas night.
Its gentle, unhurried melody is easy for children to sing, too.
I can hear the Christmas songShinzawa Toshihiko

This one song has a cheerful, Christmassy feel—like “The Christmas Song.” Although it carries the atmosphere of a traditional folk tune, it was actually composed by a Japanese songwriter.
One of the great things about it is the many characters—like the bear in the forest and the snowman—so it’s a lot of fun to sing while switching between their voices and personalities.
Shake some bells and have a lively, joyful Christmas!
sledding

It’s an orchestral piece composed by the American composer Leroy Anderson.
You hear it in many places during the Christmas season.
The “shan-shan-shan” sound further enhances the festive Christmas feeling, and I bet children get excited when they hear this tune!

I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus

It’s a famous Christmas song that the Jackson 5, who performed when Michael Jackson was a child, also covered.
It’s a really lovely tune, but it does say that Santa is actually Dad…
Children who still believe in Santa might freeze up for a moment, but let’s smooth things over with the fun, festive atmosphere of Christmas (lol).
Winter Wonderland

A Christmas song known in Japan under the title “Suteki na Yukigeshiki” (“Lovely Snow Scene”).
It’s one of the classics you hear all over town when the holiday season arrives and is often used in children’s English programs as well.
While the original lyrics depict a romantic couple, Kenji Sazanami’s well-known Japanese adaptation conjures up images of children playing in the snow.
It isn’t strictly a song about Christmas, but since Christmas coincides with the snowy season, it’s a tune you’ll definitely want to sing.
With simple choreography, it’s also perfect for a school performance.
Yay! Santa is comingsakushi sakkyoku: nakagawa hirotaka

A perfect song to build excitement on Christmas Eve is “Yatta! Santa Is Coming.” As the title suggests, it captures the anticipation of Santa’s arrival.
The lyrics and composition are by Hirotaka Nakagawa, who is also active as a picture-book writer.
There’s a part in the song that sings about where Santa will come, and it could be fun to tweak that section a bit by inserting names like your home or your preschool.
There are also several spots for call-and-response, so it’s great for singing with a big group.
A Letter to SantaSakushi sakkyoku: Deguchi Takashi, PA-NON, ha-j

Sung by Takashi Deguchi, this song is a Christmas tune brimming with children’s excitement.
It gently portrays letters to Santa and the feelings of kids waiting for their presents.
Why not write your letter to Santa while listening to this track? There’s even choreography, making it perfect for singing at kindergarten or nursery school Christmas parties.
Sing it with the whole family, and it will surely become a joyful Christmas memory.
A heartwarming song that lets you feel the emotions of children waiting for Santa.
