[By Age Group] Goldfish Craft Ideas! Enjoy Fun Time with Kids
As the weather gets warmer, we tend to imagine summer-themed motifs for our crafts.
Bright red goldfish often evoke the image of goldfish scooping at summer festivals, so many of you may be thinking of incorporating them into your summer projects.
Craft activities need to be tailored to children’s ages and developmental stages, which can make it tricky to decide on the tasks and steps.
In this article, we’re introducing goldfish craft ideas by target age group.
We’ll cover a wide range—from decorations you can enjoy displaying to ideas kids can actually play with.
We hope you find them helpful.
Note: Since the items children make are treated as “works,” we use the term “seisaku” (制作) in the text.

[Age 3+] Goldfish Scooping Toy

Let’s try making a goldfish toy you can enjoy like a kendama! Crumple a tissue into a ball, cover it with a large sheet of tissue paper, and secure it with tape.
This will be the goldfish, so shape the excess tissue paper into the tail fin.
Add eyes made from round stickers and pectoral fins cut from construction paper to complete the goldfish.
Slightly split the tip of a pair of chopsticks, insert a paper plate between the split ends, and tape it in place.
Tie the goldfish and the paper plate together with string, and your toy is ready.
Prepare tissue paper in several colors so the children can make goldfish in their favorite colors.
Goldfish craft made with a marble run [age 5]

Here’s a craft idea using marbles that’s popular both as a toy and as interior decor.
First, cut out a fishbowl, a water surface, and the goldfish’s body from colored construction paper.
Next, roll a paint-covered marble over the cut-out water surface to create patterns, then draw gravel and aquatic plants.
Cut a paper doily into a semicircle, fold both ends inward to make a fan shape, and use a sponge dauber to color it red.
This will be the goldfish’s tail fin, so attach it to the goldfish body made from colored paper.
Use the remaining doily to make the pectoral and dorsal fins and glue them on as well.
Finally, stick the water surface and the goldfish—with its face drawn—onto the fishbowl, and you’re done.
[Age 1] Transparent Goldfish Made with Plastic Bags
![[Age 1] Transparent Goldfish Made with Plastic Bags](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/BABc9b1_mts/sddefault.jpg)
Let’s try making a transparent goldfish using just three items: a plastic bag, origami paper, and a pipe cleaner.
First, have the child crumple the origami paper into a ball.
Depending on their age, this might be tricky, so help them if they’re having trouble.
Once the paper is crumpled, place it inside the plastic bag and wrap the pipe cleaner around the middle to tie it off.
The bottom of the bag will be the goldfish’s face, and the bag opening will become the tail fin, so shape it accordingly.
Finally, stick eyes on the face, and your transparent goldfish is complete! Use origami paper in a few colors to make it bright and colorful.

Goldfish made with wax-resist painting (for age 2)
Here’s a goldfish craft idea that lets kids enjoy a resist painting activity using paint and crayons.
For preparation, cut out a fishbowl shape from drawing paper and goldfish shapes from origami paper.
Have the children draw bubbles on the fishbowl with a white crayon, then paint over it to enjoy the resist effect.
After the resist painting is done, have them draw faces and scale patterns on the origami goldfish.
Finish by gluing the goldfish onto the fishbowl.
It’s also fun to use transparent origami paper for the goldfish, as the colors change when it’s pasted down.
[Age 5] Cute Goldfish Balloon
![[Age 5] Cute Goldfish Balloon](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/WhYhCwpNfOc/sddefault.jpg)
A dexterous 5-year-old—how about making a goldfish balloon out of origami? Fold the paper into a square twice, then squash the pocketed parts to form two triangles.
It’s easier if you first crease along the diagonals.
Fold one of the triangles the same way you would for a traditional origami balloon.
For the other triangle, fold the left and right edges in to meet the center line.
Open out the lower-left corner to form a triangle, then stand up the sections you folded to the center along the paper’s middle.
Blow air through a straw to inflate it, and you’re done! Some steps are a bit delicate, so have an adult make it together with the child.
Paku-Paku Goldfish
https://www.tiktok.com/@hoiku.labo/video/7250014056122207490For the hot summer, a great recommendation for preschoolers is the “Munch-Munch Goldfish” origami.
Fold it, open it up, and move its mouth, and it looks just like a goldfish from a scooping game swimming around.
Use cool-colored origami paper for a fresh look that instantly boosts the summer vibe.
Once finished, kids can show their goldfish to friends or use them for pretend play—the possibilities are endless.
Many children get hooked and say, “I want to make another one!” fostering imagination while using their fingertips.
Display them on the wall to instantly create a nostalgic atmosphere.
It’s an origami idea full of seasonal charm—fun to fold, delightful to display, and memorable too.
Ranchu (a breed of fancy goldfish)

Among goldfish, the ranchu is especially gorgeous—let’s try folding one with origami.
First, fold the paper into a triangle along the diagonal twice.
Next, fold one corner toward the center.
Then flip it over, fold both sides along the middle, and fold the whole piece in half along the center.
After that, make a reverse fold at the tip.
Then make a few more reverse folds.
This part is a bit tricky, so if it’s difficult, please proceed together with a parent or guardian.
Red or orange paper will probably suit it best.
