[Childcare] Craft ideas to make for Mother's Day
Let’s make a Mother’s Day gift filled with gratitude for our beloved moms and caregivers.
Creations made by children are treasures for mothers, aren’t they?
Since the approach varies depending on the children’s ages, we’ve gathered a range of ideas that kids of any age can enjoy making this time.
They range from message cards to items that can be used in daily life!
We hope the children can create heartfelt gifts that convey their message of “Thank you for everything!”
In this text, because what children create is treated as works (art/projects), we use the term “seisaku” (制作).

Photos of cherished memories pop out from the pocket! Here’s an idea for a Memory Apron.
It’s an adorable Mother’s Day gift we highly recommend.
You’ll need photos or drawings, paper plates, construction paper, and decorative materials like pom-poms and ribbons.
It’s great that you can get all the supplies at a 100-yen shop, too.
Using paint to dab and stamp color onto the apron is a fun part of the process!

Decorating is so much fun! Here are ideas for a photo frame that looks like stained glass.
May also brings Mother’s Day! Many of you might be wondering what to make for the occasion.
Let’s create a stained-glass-style photo frame that looks even more beautiful when light shines through it.
You’ll need: a toilet paper roll, laminating film, origami paper, masking tape, double-sided tape, stickers, construction paper, and scissors.
You’ll end up with an original photo frame that really showcases each child’s individuality!
Wreath making
Gifts of appreciation from young children are special.
It’s heartwarming to feel their growth and think, “They can do this now!” Wreaths made with construction paper, origami paper, and ribbons are projects even small children can try, making them perfect Mother’s Day presents.
Try different techniques like stamping—creating shapes with clay or paper, then applying paint and stamping—or torn-paper collage, where you tear colorful origami and paste it down.
You can also decorate with pretty ribbons using a simple lacing technique.
Let’s make a one-of-a-kind wreath!

Heart card made with yarn

Let’s handcraft a heart-shaped card made with yarn that’s soft to the touch and cozy—perfect for Mother’s Day.
Draw a heart shape on a piece of cardstock in your favorite color.
Along this outline, use an awl or similar tool to punch several holes.
Thread yarn in the color of your choice through the holes.
The direction you thread through the holes can be random—that actually gives it a relaxed, charming look.
You’ll end up with a stylish card that’s fluffy and a bit three-dimensional.
Add a message around the heart to make it feel even more special.
Cute Bouquet Card

This is a message card shaped like a bouquet of carnations, perfect for Mother’s Day.
First, fold construction paper and form it into a bouquet shape.
Make the petals using red origami paper; you can adjust the difficulty based on the child’s age, so tailor it to the grade or class.
Trace the child’s hand on construction paper, cut it out, and attach it to the card so parents can also feel their child’s growth.
Finally, write a message on the card to complete a wonderful Mother’s Day gift.
Surprise accessory case
Let’s make a surprising little gift where flowers pop out when you open a paper cup.
Let the children freely decorate the two paper cups.
Washi tape and stickers come in handy.
Next, make the flowers using tissue (flower) paper.
Adjust the tasks to match the children’s ages.
Create a spring with construction paper and attach it to the bottom of the paper cup—that’s it.
When it pops open, the pretty flowers burst out, and parents are sure to be delighted.
Flower message card

With a feeling of “thank you as always,” let’s try making a floral message card! Fold origami as if you were making a crane, and cut it partway through.
From there, create pleated petals and open up folded sections to form the inside of the flower.
Use green origami to make the stem, write your message on the white part of the flower, and you’re done! If you use scissors that cut a zigzag edge, it might make the flower look even more realistic.
It’s also fun to choose which patterns of origami paper to use!
