[Childcare] Craft ideas to make for Mother's Day
Let’s make a Mother’s Day gift filled with gratitude for our beloved moms and caregivers.
Creations made by children are treasures for mothers, aren’t they?
Since the approach varies depending on the children’s ages, we’ve gathered a range of ideas that kids of any age can enjoy making this time.
They range from message cards to items that can be used in daily life!
We hope the children can create heartfelt gifts that convey their message of “Thank you for everything!”
In this text, because what children create is treated as works (art/projects), we use the term “seisaku” (制作).

[Childcare] Craft ideas you’ll want to make for Mother’s Day (41–50)
Easy carnations with tissue paper

A perfect Mother’s Day craft: carnations made with tissue paper! Paste a doily onto a circle cut from construction paper.
Tape a green chenille stem (pipe cleaner) on top to make the carnation stem, and glue on narrow leaf shapes cut from construction paper.
Crumple red or pink tissue paper into small balls and stick them onto the doily.
Fold the construction paper base so it forms a bouquet shape, and your tissue-paper carnation bouquet is complete! Finish by adding a ribbon or writing a message in the open space.
Making a carnation brooch

This brooch features carnations made from layers of tissue paper that look three-dimensional and realistic.
Stack about five sheets of tissue paper cut to a suitable size, accordion-fold them, and secure the center with a twist tie.
Trim the edges with craft pinking shears, then gently separate the tissue layers one by one to form a carnation piece.
Punch a hole in the center of a circle cut from cardboard, thread the carnation’s twist tie through and fasten it, then attach another piece of cardboard with a safety pin affixed.
Your brooch is ready to brighten up your chest area, bag, and more.
Canvas flower

Canvas flowers made by attaching blossoms to a mounting board! On a backing sheet with a bouquet outline, you attach your choice of flowers, leaves, and seed pods—easy to find at 100-yen shops.
Add decorations like ribbons, and you’ll have a gorgeous piece perfect for Mother’s Day! A project created together with teachers and friends will surely become a cherished Mother’s Day memory.
After you finish, lean it against the wall or add a string to hang it as a wall decoration, and display it somewhere you can admire it anytime.
pen holder

How about a pen holder as a practical gift? Pen holders made from toilet paper rolls are great because they make it easy to use children’s artwork.
First, have the kids create several sheets of drawing paper using different techniques such as spattering and marbling.
Next, wrap the paper around the toilet paper rolls.
Make a few and vary the heights to create a more functional pen holder.
Attach them to a cardstock base with glue, and it’s done! You’ll have a lovely piece that brings back memories of the children’s smiles whenever the pens are used.
[2-year-old class] Crinkle-Crinkle Bouquet

How about making a bouquet using tissue paper, which is thinner and softer than origami paper? Create a base with a circle of thick paper and a slightly smaller patterned paper in a matching color.
Put double-sided tape on it, then stick on crumpled tissue paper pieces.
Attach a green chenille stem for the stalk, fold both sides of the base inward, and you’ve got a lovely bouquet! One of the charms of tissue paper is that it unintentionally forms flowers in all sorts of shapes.
For Mother’s Day, give a one-of-a-kind bouquet.
Origami bouquet

It’s lovely to give a bouquet when expressing gratitude, isn’t it? How about making a bouquet with origami? In this activity, you fold paper flowers and attach them to a sheet arranged to look like a bouquet.
Since the flower-folding steps can be a bit complex, you could also change it so that participants simply glue pre-made flowers onto the bouquet.
To make it more fun, prepare a wide range of colors so everyone can choose their favorites—“Which color should I pick?”—and create a bouquet to their own taste.
Handprint carnation

Why not send a cute handprint carnation for Mother’s Day—something even infants who can’t use scissors or glue can make? Little children’s hands are as adorable as flowers.
Take a print of those sweet little hands and decorate it cutely.
First, press your child’s hand into air-dry clay to make a mold.
Spread the palm open for the imprint, and paint it red so it looks just like a tiny carnation.
Before the clay dries, embed sparkly pieces and colorful beads, and attach a green-painted chopstick as the stem to finish.
Adding a photo or a ribbon is a nice touch, too.
In conclusion
We introduced craft ideas you can give on Mother’s Day.
We gathered ideas that kids of various ages can try, so feel free to adapt the steps to suit the children you work with and their usual activities.
For parents, anything their own child makes is a treasure.
Let’s have fun creating so it becomes a heartfelt gift.
