[Childcare] Ocean-themed craft ideas! From wall displays to 3D projects

In summer, ocean-themed crafts are a common activity in childcare.

Ocean motifs feel refreshing and are perfect for the season.

Sea creatures like fish and crabs are fun for children to make.

However, finding age-appropriate ideas and new forms of expression can be challenging.

So, we’ve gathered a collection of ocean-themed craft ideas here.

You’ll find a variety of projects, from flat drawings to three-dimensional creations.

Please use these as a reference and enjoy a fun summer with the children! Note: Since the children’s creations are treated as works, the term “seisaku” (制作) is used in the text.

Sea creatures made with simple paper plates

Let’s make a cute seagull sailor using a paper plate.

It’s super easy! Fold the paper plate in half and position it with the curve facing downward.

Glue on a face, wings, a hat, and other parts made from construction paper, then draw the face and body with crayons to finish.

If you use a blue crayon to draw the sailor’s outfit details, it’ll look even more refreshing and summery.

The gentle rocking motion is adorable.

Be sure to craft and play while singing the song “Kamome no Suihei-san” together!

Sea creatures made from handprints and footprints

How about creating various sea creatures using handprints and footprints? Prepare lots of handprint and footprint stamps in different colors, and then arrange and rotate them to resemble different marine animals.

For example, turning a handprint sideways can look like a fish, and using a footprint can suggest larger sea creatures like whale sharks or dolphins.

Combine the handprints and footprints with plain construction paper to represent all kinds of ocean life.

It’s also a good idea to have the children prepare their handprints and footprints in advance.

Aquarium of tissue boxes

[Nursery/Kindergarten] An Ocean Aquarium Made from a Tissue Box 🐟🦈🐠 [Upcycled Craft]
Aquarium of tissue boxes

Let me introduce a “tissue box aquarium” that will make your room feel cool and refreshing.

Since you use an empty tissue box, it’s easy to gather the materials.

Any work involving a utility knife must be done by an adult.

First, cut out the front, leaving a 2-centimeter border, and make slits in the sides.

Next, attach colored construction paper to the back to create the background.

Stick on origami fish, seaweed, rocks, and more.

Attach a twist tie to larger creatures like sharks, thread it through the side slits, and you’re done.

It’s a fun craft because you can move the pieces and play with it.

Fish Hide-and-Seek

Preschool/Kindergarten: August ‘Hide-and-Seek in the Waves’ Painting/Craft
Fish Hide-and-Seek

Introducing “Fish Hide-and-Seek,” an activity that depicts an underwater scene.

First, use a round sponge dauber (tanpo) and paint to dab colorful dots onto construction paper to create the background.

Finger dabbing is fun, too.

Next, fold the top edge of the base slightly and cut the lower part into wave shapes.

Adjust this step to suit the children’s ages—switch to straight cuts, for example.

Make fish, seaweed, and rocks from origami or colored paper, and glue them onto the base to finish.

You can also lift the waves to play a game of finding the hidden fish.

Paper plate turtle

[Childcare Craft] Summer Wall Decoration: Cute Turtles with Paper Plates
Paper plate turtle

Here’s how to make a paper-plate turtle that swims smoothly through the sea.

Get crayons, a paper plate, raffia tape, and scissors ready.

Color the paper plate with a green crayon.

Make slits around the edge of the plate, then weave the raffia tape through the slits to create the turtle’s shell pattern.

Attach the turtle’s legs and head, made from construction paper, to the plate, and you’re done! Mount it on a construction-paper background, draw sea creatures, and create a summery July wall display! By changing the color of the raffia tape for the shell, you can make your own original shell design!

Sea and Fish Bubble Art

[Drawing] Playing with soap bubbles and paint: Bubble Art
Sea and Fish Bubble Art

Let’s try bubbly bubble art that’s full of fizzing fun! Pour some paint and bubble solution into a shallow dish and mix them together.

Once mixed, use a straw to gently blow air into the mixture to make it foam.

Watching the bubbles grow bigger and bigger is sure to get kids excited! After it’s nice and foamy, lightly place a sheet of drawing paper on top—and you’ve got a magical artwork.

It’s a delightful technique that sparks children’s curiosity.

It would be fun to try mixing different colors, too! Be sure to supervise carefully so kids don’t accidentally suck the liquid up through the straw, and keep safety in mind as they work.

A Stroll by the Sea with the Boing-Boing Jellyfish

[Kindergartens & Daycare] Fun to Move! July “Poyoyon” Jellyfish Sea Walk – Art & Craft
A Stroll by the Sea with the Boing-Boing Jellyfish

Jellyfish that swim all jiggly and fluffy are so cute, aren’t they? Let’s make a craft themed around those adorable jellyfish taking a stroll through the sea! To capture that jiggly jellyfish feel, it’s best to add a mechanism that creates movement.

After drawing a jellyfish on construction paper, attach an accordion-folded strip of paper behind it to act like a spring.

That way, when you touch it, the jellyfish will wobble and jiggle, making it fun for kids.

Around the jellyfish, draw fish and seaweed or add origami pieces to create a lively ocean scene.

When coloring the jellyfish, use paints with extra water to bring out their translucent look!
