Have you ever seen jellyfish at an aquarium or in the ocean?

Jellyfish can grow to about 30 centimeters in diameter, and most of their bodies are made of water.

This time, we’d like to introduce a fun jellyfish craft inspired by this popular sea creature!

It’s designed for ages 0 to 5, with activities suitable for each age.

It will stimulate children’s motivation and help them engage enthusiastically in the crafting process.

Once the crafts are finished, it would be great for teachers and children to play “aquarium pretend” together.

Be sure to make these cute jellyfish with the children!

[Ages 4 and up] Making jellyfish with wet-on-wet painting

Let’s make jellyfish using a “bleed painting” technique, where you let paint bleed into paper soaked with water to create a distinctive look.

First, cut a backing sheet into the shape of a jellyfish and soak it in water.

Take it out and apply paint.

After it dries, attach the tentacle parts using materials like raffia ribbon (suzuran tape), then draw the face to complete your jellyfish.

You can create originality by combining different bleed colors and tentacle colors, and it’s also important to think about what kind of artwork you’ll assemble with the jellyfish you’ve made.

Jellyfish made with simple paper plates

Jellyfish made with simple paper plates

This craft makes use of a paper plate’s natural curve: cut it and combine various parts to create a jellyfish.

Use a paper plate cut in half as the body, then attach tentacle parts made from things like raffia tape or ribbons.

Finally, add a string so it can be hung, and you’re done.

It’s also fun to display it alongside other sea creatures.

Play around with the tentacle length and number, the expression, and the color balance to create your own unique jellyfish.

You might get a different look if you use the paper plate’s serrated edge, too.

A craft jellyfish that makes use of the soft look of plastic bags—creating a round shape and then deciding how to decorate it is the key.

Inflate a plastic bag with air, tie off the end to make it round for the body, and attach legs using plastic string or similar materials.

Adjust the length and number of legs to match the size of the bag, aiming for a more dynamic effect.

Incorporating ribbon for the leg parts or placing origami or decorations inside the bag will make the jellyfish more colorful and festive, so that’s recommended as well.

Let’s make a cute origami character that highlights the jellyfish’s roundness and softness.

The body uses the front side of the paper, while the tentacles use the back side, so you can enjoy the contrast between the two colors.

Using the halfway crease as a guide, fold little by little—trimming the corners as you go while forming the tentacle parts at the same time.

Avoid pressing too hard on the creases; aim to create a soft transition between the tentacles and the body.

If you use double-sided colored origami paper, you’ll get an even more colorful look.

A simple jellyfish craft made with a sink strainer net and tissue paper is easy even for small children.

Just roll tissue paper of your favorite colors into several balls, place them inside the strainer net, and tie the opening with thread—that’s it.

Since you don’t use tools like scissors during the craft, it’s a great idea for everyone from young children to older adults.

However, if you thread a string through it to hang in a room, you’ll need to use a needle, so have an adult help as needed.

[Ages 1 and up] Colorful Jellyfish Made with Jelly Cups

A jellyfish craft that makes use of the transparent look of jelly cups is perfect as a hanging decoration.

The method is simple: cut raffia tape (suzuran tape) to a uniform length, pack it into the cup, and attach it there.

Then just add some twine so it can be hung, and it’s done.

For an even more colorful finish, try using raffia tape in various colors or stick finely cut colored cellophane to the inside of the cup.

[Ages 4 and up] Make jellyfish with pipe cleaners at the mall

This is a colorful craft that uses pipe cleaners as jellyfish tentacles.

The jellyfish body is made by painting construction paper with paint; changing the colors of the paper and paint makes it even more vibrant.

After that, just attach the tentacles with pipe cleaners and you’re done.

It’s recommended to choose colors different from the body to make the whole piece pop.

Since the jellyfish alone looks flat, arrange it with sea-themed motifs like seaweed and fish to create depth through overlapping and achieve a more three-dimensional look.
