[Childcare] Ocean-themed craft ideas! From wall displays to 3D projects
In summer, ocean-themed crafts are a common activity in childcare.
Ocean motifs feel refreshing and are perfect for the season.
Sea creatures like fish and crabs are fun for children to make.
However, finding age-appropriate ideas and new forms of expression can be challenging.
So, we’ve gathered a collection of ocean-themed craft ideas here.
You’ll find a variety of projects, from flat drawings to three-dimensional creations.
Please use these as a reference and enjoy a fun summer with the children! Note: Since the children’s creations are treated as works, the term “seisaku” (制作) is used in the text.

Shining Fish Made from Aluminum Foil
https://www.instagram.com/p/Cs_FTzepUmp/Why not make a glittering fish with aluminum foil? First, cut construction paper to the size of the fish’s body, and cut drawing paper into the shape of a fish with a tail.
Snip notches around the construction paper, then hook and wrap twine around it.
Next, cover it with aluminum foil and secure it on the back.
Gently press so the shapes stand out through the foil.
Color between the raised twine lines with permanent markers in any colors you like.
Finally, glue it onto the drawing paper—and you’re done! You’ll have a shiny fish that sparkles in all sorts of colors.
Aluminum foil blot painting creation

Let’s make a summer-themed ocean art piece using aluminum foil and bleeding colors.
First, draw a picture on white construction paper.
Fish, jellyfish, and other kid-friendly motifs are perfect.
Next, color a sheet of spread-out aluminum foil with water-based markers.
Using a variety of colors will make the result look beautiful.
Spray water onto the foil with a mist bottle, then press your drawing paper onto it and press down firmly with your hands.
Once the marker colors have transferred, let it dry—and you’re done! You’ll get a creation with softly blended, delicate colors.
Making a tapestry of sea creatures
https://www.tiktok.com/@nono.seisaku.book/video/7515003842078051592Let’s make a summery “Sea Creatures Tapestry.” We’ll create three creatures: a fish, a jellyfish, and an octopus.
For the fish, put crumpled tissue paper into a clear plastic bag, tie it with a pipe cleaner, then secure the corners with tape.
For the jellyfish, stuff a clear plastic bag with tissue paper, shape it into a round form with tape, and attach shredded curling ribbon to make the tentacles.
Make the octopus the same way: put tissue paper in a bag and tie it with a pipe cleaner.
For the base, thread a string through a straw, wrap the straw with curling ribbon, and then attach the creatures to complete the tapestry.
Whale Shark Sticker Activity

Speaking of popular creatures at aquariums, whale sharks are a top favorite! Watching them glide leisurely in a huge tank really gives you a sense of the ocean’s vastness.
Let’s make a whale shark while having fun with stickers.
First, create the whale shark’s parts out of construction paper and glue them together.
Color the mouth area white, draw the face, then add patterns by sticking on white round stickers.
And that’s it—your whale shark is complete! You can also switch up the sticker colors to add your own personal touch.
Aquarium building

As we spend more time indoors during the summer, why not take this opportunity to enjoy some focused crafting with your children? This time, we’re introducing an aquarium-making activity.
Aquariums, where you can see a variety of creatures up close, are full of charm for kids.
By creating their own aquariums, children can nurture their creativity and expressive skills.
Prepare familiar materials like paper plates and plastic bottles, and let the children cut and paste according to their own ideas and images—this helps develop fine motor skills and spatial awareness.
It’s great to carry out the activity while valuing children’s free-thinking and flashes of inspiration.
We hope you’ll give it a try!
Fish Hide-and-Seek

Introducing “Fish Hide-and-Seek,” an activity that depicts an underwater scene.
First, use a round sponge dauber (tanpo) and paint to dab colorful dots onto construction paper to create the background.
Finger dabbing is fun, too.
Next, fold the top edge of the base slightly and cut the lower part into wave shapes.
Adjust this step to suit the children’s ages—switch to straight cuts, for example.
Make fish, seaweed, and rocks from origami or colored paper, and glue them onto the base to finish.
You can also lift the waves to play a game of finding the hidden fish.
Aquarium of tissue boxes

Let me introduce a “tissue box aquarium” that will make your room feel cool and refreshing.
Since you use an empty tissue box, it’s easy to gather the materials.
Any work involving a utility knife must be done by an adult.
First, cut out the front, leaving a 2-centimeter border, and make slits in the sides.
Next, attach colored construction paper to the back to create the background.
Stick on origami fish, seaweed, rocks, and more.
Attach a twist tie to larger creatures like sharks, thread it through the side slits, and you’re done.
It’s a fun craft because you can move the pieces and play with it.
