Making yo-yos that are super popular at street stalls!
When you think of summer, you think of “yo-yo fishing,” right?
Among the many food stalls lined up at festivals, yo-yo fishing is especially popular with children.
Catching the yo-yos is tricky, but it’s a beloved staple of Japanese festivals that everyone can enjoy together.
This time, we’d like to introduce how to make festival yo-yos.
We hope that through this activity, children can experience and connect with traditional Japanese summer culture.
If teachers can prepare the slightly difficult parts in advance, the activity should go more smoothly.
Please try making a variety of yo-yos!

Yo-yo making is a big hit at the food stalls too! (11–20)
Too Beautiful Yo-Yo

This is an idea for a yo-yo made using the papier-mâché technique.
It might be difficult to actually play with, but the translucent look is very beautiful, so I think it would be popular as a prize! First, as preparation, cut the design paper into small pieces and mix glue and water in a 1:1 ratio.
Inflate a water balloon, and while applying the glue-and-water mixture, attach the pieces of design paper.
Once everything is covered, let it dry thoroughly.
After the paper has dried, pop the water balloon, glue a rubber band to the inside, and it’s done!
In conclusion
This time, we introduced how to make yo-yos—a classic feature of summer festivals.
Each yo-yo craft is easy to incorporate into childcare and early childhood settings.
They’re perfect for helping children get familiar with seasonal events.
We covered a wide range of ideas, from crafts using newspaper and milk cartons to yo-yo projects using paint and origami.
Try finding your favorite one! We also recommend expanding play by including mixed-age group activities, like pretend festival play, so children of all ages—from younger to older—can join and enjoy together.
