Happy Endingback number

This is back number’s 16th single, released in November 2016.
It was chosen as the theme song for the film “My Tomorrow, Your Yesterday.” It’s been crafted into a very beautiful rock ballad.
Although I’m introducing it in this article with the theme of mixed voice, in reality there are very few parts in this song that are actually sung in mixed voice.
However, the singer skillfully switches and differentiates between chest voice and falsetto, especially in the high notes of the chorus, achieving an impressive vocal expression.
I thought that by mastering this switching technique, you would naturally become able to use mixed voice as well, so I decided to feature it here.
Listen closely to the original vocal track and study which parts use which type of vocal production, then practice accordingly.
I’m sure you’ll gain a lot from it.
SAY ITBALLISTIK BOYZ from EXILE TRIBE

BALLISTIK BOYZ is a boys group from LDH.
Rather than having the typical LDH style, their appeal lies in performance and musicality reminiscent of modern K-pop, earning overwhelming support from young women.
Among their songs, the one I particularly recommend is SAY IT.
While there isn’t a clearly spotlighted mixed voice section, the vocals pass through mixed voice before transitioning to falsetto, making it a perfect piece for practice.
budKobukuro

Kobukuro’s 14th single, released in March 2007. It was also written as the theme song for the Fuji TV drama “Tokyo Tower: Mom and Me, and Sometimes Dad.” In Kobukuro’s songs, especially Kuroda’s part...
These will be very helpful for practicing the two points above. In his singing, the switch from chest voice is so smooth that it can be hard to notice, but it does give the impression of being a relatively throat-constricted mixed voice. Try singing with the intention of placing the sound as high as possible in the oral cavity—around the bridge of the nose.

GET STUPIDXY

XY is a group with an impressive style that mixes band elements into a boy-group concept.
They’re well-known as a group produced by YOSHIKI of X JAPAN.
Among their songs, the one I especially recommend as a reference for mixed voice is GET STUPID.
Arranged with a K-pop-like vibe, this track features a relatively low-difficulty mixed voice in the first half—easy enough that some people might even manage it in chest voice.
If you’re not yet comfortable with mixed voice, starting your practice with this song is a great idea.
Let’s become a familyFukuyama Masaharu

Masaharu Fukuyama’s 27th single, released in August 2011.
Speaking of Fukuyama, his appeal lies in his low vocal range, so you might not think of him as an artist who uses much mixed voice.
However, to deliver this calm song, he actually employs his mixed voice very effectively.
It’s a very instructive example of how to use mixed voice within a song that emphasizes the lower-mid range.
Sunny dropNovelbright

A number known as a challenge piece for its wide range and continuous high notes.
The high leaps in the final chorus are especially an S‑tier difficulty point.
The overall vocal range spans roughly C#3 to F#5, which is quite wide, and you should pay particular attention to the switch into the high tones in the chorus.
Of course, if you just belt recklessly, you’ll wreck your throat, so be mindful of resonance placement and aim to let the highs come out comfortably.
In any range, keep the image of ringing the space behind your head, and as the pitch rises, increase your explosiveness.
Before singing, don’t forget to warm up with lip rolls, humming, and similar exercises!
The Departure of LoveOfisharu Higedan Dism

This is a heartbreak ballad included on the album “MAN IN THE MIRROR.” The overall vocal range spans E3 to F5, and although the higher notes appear more in the latter half and may feel high, the clear, band-driven drum sound makes it very easy to groove to.
The B section initially shifts into an odd meter, so it might make you go “huh?” at first, but if you deliver the lyrics straightforwardly, you’ll be able to ride the melodic line.
When singing, keep a lightly bouncing feel at all times—imagine you are the drummer and lock in the rhythm firmly, and you should find it easier to sing.
