[For Men] Mix Voice Practice Songs: Reference Tracks to Help You Hit High Notes More Easily

“I want to sing high notes, but my throat tightens up…” “I wish I could expand the range I can sing in chest voice!” For anyone struggling with these issues, learning mix voice is a key to dramatically boosting your expressive power as a singer.

However, practicing aimlessly often makes the path to improvement longer.

Did you know that choosing the right songs can help you acquire mix voice more efficiently?

In this article, we’ll introduce plenty of practice songs that are great for training high notes.

Let’s move step by step toward your ideal singing voice through songs you can enjoy singing!

[For Men] Mixed Voice Practice Songs: Reference Tracks to Make High Notes Easier (41–50)

Hailing from Osaka, the rock band Novelbright released this digital-only single in April 2022, ahead of the album Assort that features the track.

The vocals from the B-melody into the chorus are a great reference for effective use of mixed voice and falsetto.

In particular, the chorus melody has many sections with large pitch leaps, making it ideal as practice material.

Try practicing while avoiding constricting your throat as much as possible, and imagine placing the voice against your upper palate.

BE:FIRST, the first group to establish boy group culture in Japan.

They’re still leading the Japanese boy group scene today, so many men may already know them.

Among their songs, the one I especially recommend is Sailing.

The part where mixed voice appears is the shout right before the final chorus.

Because they sing a smooth, clean mixed voice there, it’s a perfect track for beginners to use as a reference for vocal technique.

Currently, the Japanese rock band ONE OK ROCK is earning high acclaim overseas as well.

Their style, which weaves a high-tone voice into orthodox rock, is extremely catchy and powerful.

Among their songs, the one I especially recommend as a reference for mixed voice is Make It Out Alive.

In this piece, the chorus features a mixed voice enhanced with the band’s signature shouts—the true essence of ONE OK ROCK.

It’s also likely to help improve basic vocal skills, making it an ideal choice for a practice piece.

New WorldBUMP OF CHICKEN

A song by Bump of Chicken released in July 2019.

Songs like this, sung with a light touch and in a high register, are also ideal for practicing mixed voice.

If you sing in full chest voice, you won’t get this buoyant, pleasantly relaxed feel; and if you sing entirely in falsetto, the sound can become thin, and there will likely be many parts that are too low to sing in falsetto in the first place.

Try practicing by firmly supporting your upper body with your abdominal muscles, and aim to produce your voice with the sensation of letting it resonate through the nasal cavity.

Fu re te Fu re ruTK from RIN TO SHITE SIGURE

The B-side to “unravel,” which could be called TK’s signature song, is actually “Fu re te Fu re ru.” It explodes even more with high notes and falsetto than “unravel,” and it’s one of my absolute favorites to sing at karaoke.

Rather than a clean falsetto, TK’s falsetto pierces like a cry, so unless you can normally hit high notes, it’s a tough song to pull off… That said, it’s a super cool track, so if you think of it as a way to practice falsetto, I definitely recommend it for rock lovers! It’s fine to start with a weak falsetto.

Just keep practicing using a lot of breath over and over, and gradually build your explosiveness—that’s the idea!

[Alexandros] – Flash (MV) Theme Song of Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway's Flash
flash[Alexandros]

This is [Alexandros]’s 19th single in total, released on May 5, 2021.

It was chosen as the theme song for the feature animation Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway.

Many people may associate mixed voice with a soft singing tone, but using it like [Alexandros]’s Yohei Kawakami does—as a “powerful falsetto”—is also a very effective approach.

Try to avoid constricting your throat as much as possible, increase the breath speed when phonating, and practice with the image of placing the sound against the inner side of your upper molars.

You might also aim to see how much contrast you can create with the gentle high tones used in parts of the B section—that could be a good practice goal.

Da-iCE is a high-performance dance-vocal group that has gained widespread popularity.

When you think of mixed voice, aren’t they the first that come to mind? Among their songs, the one I especially recommend is TAKE IT BACK.

This track contains a large number of mixed-voice parts, all of which push right up to the edge of falsetto.

It takes considerable training and natural ability to sing it through, but it’s more than sufficient as a reference piece.
