[For Men] Mix Voice Practice Songs: Reference Tracks to Help You Hit High Notes More Easily

“I want to sing high notes, but my throat tightens up…” “I wish I could expand the range I can sing in chest voice!” For anyone struggling with these issues, learning mix voice is a key to dramatically boosting your expressive power as a singer.

However, practicing aimlessly often makes the path to improvement longer.

Did you know that choosing the right songs can help you acquire mix voice more efficiently?

In this article, we’ll introduce plenty of practice songs that are great for training high notes.

Let’s move step by step toward your ideal singing voice through songs you can enjoy singing!

[For Men] Mix Voice Practice Songs: Reference Tracks That Make High Notes Easier (51–60)

365 daysMr.Children

A masterpiece ballad that demands delicate emotional expression and advanced vocal technique, “365 Nichi.” It’s a song where expressiveness, pitch, and falsetto control are crucial.

Many Mr.Children songs have intricately moving melodic lines, and “365 Nichi” is a prime example.

Although it was released in 2010, it was used in the NTT East/West commercials, so many people will find it familiar.

From the A verse to the B verse, the melody is gentle, making it possible to sing each phrase carefully.

From the chorus onward, the melody moves in finer steps, so you need to be very mindful of pitch.

Maintain your breath with diaphragmatic breathing and sing with a clear tone, imagining you’re using your breath efficiently without waste.

Fu re te Fu re ruTK from RIN TO SHITE SIGURE

The B-side to “unravel,” which could be called TK’s signature song, is actually “Fu re te Fu re ru.” It explodes even more with high notes and falsetto than “unravel,” and it’s one of my absolute favorites to sing at karaoke.

Rather than a clean falsetto, TK’s falsetto pierces like a cry, so unless you can normally hit high notes, it’s a tough song to pull off… That said, it’s a super cool track, so if you think of it as a way to practice falsetto, I definitely recommend it for rock lovers! It’s fine to start with a weak falsetto.

Just keep practicing using a lot of breath over and over, and gradually build your explosiveness—that’s the idea!

You‘re the Only…Ono Masatoshi

Masatoshi Ono – You’re the Only… (25th Anniversary Version) ~ Never Say Good-Bye (VS Music Video)
You‘re the Only…Ono Masatoshi

Masatoshi Ono’s third single, released in August 1992.

Ono—also active as the singer of the heavy metal band Galneryus and known as an ultra high-tone vocalist—makes this a fairly advanced pick as material for practicing mixed voice.

In Ono’s case, due to the nature of his songs, he hardly ever uses chest voice within the performance, so you could say he sings almost the entire track in mixed voice.

He doesn’t use falsetto much either, which suggests exceptionally refined vocal fold control.

Take your time without rushing, and if possible, expand your upper range through practice after receiving proper voice training.

I can’t cover the methods here, so if you’d like more details, please send me a message.

Shot In The DarkBOWWOW

VOW WOW is a band boasting the highest level of polish in Japan’s rock scene.

Their brand of hard rock—both instrumentally and vocally—meets world-class standards, earning high praise from dedicated rock aficionados at home and abroad.

Among their songs, the one I particularly recommend as a reference for mixed voice is Shot In The Dark.

The mixed voice, which interweaves shouts while maintaining thickness, is extremely rare among Japanese singers.

If you want to master a genuine mixed voice, be sure to study vocalist Genki Hitomi’s technique.

qualiaUVERworld

UVERworld’s 16th single, released in September 2010.

Analyzing vocalist TAKUYA∞’s singing reveals that he skillfully uses a mix voice with very smooth connection to chest voice, tightly adducted vocal folds, and minimal breathiness.

At a quick listen, you might find it hard to distinguish it from his chest voice.

This is another selection geared toward advanced singers, but try practicing to produce a mix voice that doesn’t become a “throaty” sound by engaging your abdominal muscles properly and controlling the cricothyroid muscle effectively.

ONE OR EIGHT is a boys’ group gaining popularity for their high-level dance-vocal performances, known for a strong hip-hop sound.

Among their works, a standout recommendation is “Don’t Tell Nobody.” In the final part transitioning from the pre-chorus to the chorus, a mixed voice comes in.

It’s an ideal track for practicing switching from mixed voice to falsetto.

The mixed voice in the latter part of the bridge is also perfect for practicing producing a powerful mixed voice.

scale (as of a fish or reptile)Hata Motohiro

It’s Motohiro Hata’s second single, released in June 2007.

Personally, I don’t really think of Hata as a singer who often uses mixed voice, but in the chorus and elsewhere he’s probably singing with a chest-dominant mix.

The vocal melody climbs stepwise, so it’s an ideal song for practicing switching from chest voice to mixed voice.

However, if you use a falsetto-leaning mixed voice, the original vibe might not come through, so whether you can faithfully reproduce that aspect will be the key point.
