[Master it in 1 Month] Learn to Play Gen Hoshino's 'SUN' on Piano! Rhythm Practice Edition
Last updated:

Week 1We practiced chord changes, so this week let’s work on changing those chords in real time.

And once you’re able to change it in real time, practice by switching to a piano-style accompaniment in your arrangement.

And along with that, we’ll also practice the intro and ending parts!

Week 2: Practice the intro and practice by actually playing the code from Week 1.

Last week's code changeIf this is difficult for you, it’s okay if you can’t change the accompaniment pattern; at least try changing it at the actual timing and adding an intro and an ending.

Even if the accompaniment pattern is simple, as long as the timing matches the original, the piece comes together.

First, practice the intro +Week 1We will actually practice the code with timing.

To practice playing chord lengths and rhythms as you actually play them, start by paying attention to the timing of when you change chords.

It refers to what is commonly called harmonic rhythm.

Next, we will check and practice the rhythm in the form of the actual accompaniment. (If it’s difficult, we’ll practice only the rhythm separately.)

Therefore,From this week onward, instead of moving on to the next block every day, please proceed with the parts you want to do and are able to do.

In particular, last weekIf you're getting bogged down at that part, moving on won't make things go well.

Please focus only on (1) this week.

Master the timing of harmony changes

Only for those who are still struggling from last week's practice!

Add the actual timing to the code changes.

This is practice with a focus on harmonic rhythm.

If you can get this far, it’ll at least take the form of a song!

Hoshino Gen “SUN” A-melo

Harmonic rhythm refers to the number of beats assigned to a single chord.

In the case of the A melody of SUN, it’s like “2-1-1.”

I explain this in detail on YouTube.

Practice for intro and ending

Intro + ending → The original song uses guitar.

Instead of playing exactly the written notes, think about and practice so that it captures the original song’s feel.

The arrangement I made is in this form.

Gen Hoshino “SUN” Intro + Ending

In fact, on the guitar I do it like below, but it’s hard to get the same nuance on the piano with the same shape.

Arrangement of the Intro and Ending of Gen Hoshino’s “SUN”

I think something like the following feels the best.

Gen Hoshino “SUN” Intro + Ending Arrangement 2

However, with this pattern the rest comes at the beginning, so it's hard to keep the beat.

Let's compare using this sheet music.

If you look at the numbers assigned to the sixteenth notes, you’ll notice that the right side only rests on even numbers, whereas the left side rests on an odd number (3).

This can be hard for beginners to grasp, but if you listen to music a lot, any form will be fine.

In the latter half, the left hand keeps the bass pattern, and I change the right hand a bit to make the downbeats easier to hear.

Practice by changing the accompaniment rhythm for each block

If you’re solid on the chord changes, practice ① in line with the melody data.

If that’s also possible, do rhythm practice with the accompaniment pattern (by block) in addition to ①, then practice running through the whole piece.

first half

latter half

Practice without stopping, even at a slow tempo.

I’ve also prepared the data.

For those who find practicing on YouTube troublesome, we also sell MIDI data (108 yen).

Since it's MIDI, you can change the tempo and also practice with a minus-one (backing track without the lead part).

Rhythm is important this week!!

There are plenty of free drum machine and metronome apps available for smartphones.

To practice in tempo, make sure to use one of the two and practice.

And in the third and fourth weeks, repeat the current practice, and it would be great if by the end you can groove in time even without data or a drum machine.

By recording your own performance and carefully listening to what works well and what doesn’t, you’ll achieve a higher-quality performance.

In pop music, rhythm is everything!

It’s not that playing something difficult, with lots of finger movement and a score that looks complicated, is what’s good.

Let's work hard aiming for 'Does it have the groove?' and 'Is it cool?'
