Types of music genres (91–100)
Mariachi

In Japan, people often use this term to refer to Mexican music in general, but strictly speaking, it refers to the ensemble that performs it.
In addition to traditional Mexican music, they may also play Cuban son and bolero, which originated in Spain.
Mambo

It’s a Cuban dance music style that emerged in the late 1930s.
Developed from rumba, it incorporates elements of jazz and is often performed by big bands.
A distinctive feature is the use of the horn section as rhythm instruments.
mixture rock

The term “mixture rock” is Japanese-made English, so it isn’t widely recognized globally, but it’s a fairly popular genre within Japan.
It’s used to mean rock that blends Black music (rap, hip-hop, reggae), so its musical style is very broad.
Because the expression is somewhat vague, it can be difficult to classify clearly.
meringue

It is a type of music popular among Latin Americans in countries around the Caribbean.
With a lively, repeating duple rhythm, it’s perfect for dancing.
It is an old form of dance music created from a blend of African music and elements of European music.
modal jazz

Although the hard bop style had become established, its increasing constraints limited the scope of performance.
When it reached that limit, a new performance style emerged: modal jazz.
With the establishment of modal jazz, music no longer centered on chord progressions, giving soloists greater freedom and expanding the range of improvisation!
Mor Lam

It’s traditional music from places like Laos and Thailand’s northeastern Isan region! It’s sometimes discussed alongside Luk Thung, which is considered Thai enka, but strictly speaking, it seems to be a different genre.
It’s primarily performed with traditional instruments, features a distinctive rapid-fire vocal style, and is characterized by its unique rhythms.
Lovers rock

In the reggae genre, songs with love as their theme and a sweet, soul-like sound are called Lover’s Rock.
It’s said to be a genre that originated in the UK, and many tracks have become hits worldwide.
It’s also characteristic that they’re more often sung by women!
