Recommended in January! Make feathers and hagoita (battledores)

[Made in January] Hagoita and Hane (battledore and shuttlecock)
Recommended in January! Make feathers and hagoita (battledores)

Speaking of games famous for the New Year, it has to be the traditional hagoita (battledore) game.

Let’s prepare milk cartons, bottle caps, raffia tape (suzuran tape), construction paper, scissors, and glue, and make one together.

For the paddle part, cut the milk carton into the shape of a hagoita and double it up to increase strength.

If you make the handle even sturdier, it will be easier to use.

For decorations, it’s recommended to cut shapes from construction paper or origami paper.

For the shuttlecock, place two bottle caps together and insert shredded raffia tape between them, then secure it firmly with tape.

Once it’s finished, try playing with your friends and have fun.

A warm oden-themed wall

Perfect for winter! Here’s a fun craft where you can make your own original oden pot.

You’ll need double-sided tape, glue, crayons, and colored construction paper.

First, use your favorite crayon colors to draw patterns all over a sheet of paper.

Cut the paper into the shape of a pot, then cut colored paper for the inside of the pot and glue it on.

Next, make oden ingredients out of colored paper.

It’s also a great idea to prepare some in advance and let the children choose.

Stick double-sided tape on the ingredients and place them in the pot, and you’re done! You can also make the ingredients together with the children, adjusting the difficulty to their age.

Daruma

Here’s a fun idea for making daruma decorations for New Year’s.

First, flatten a toilet paper roll and make three cuts from one edge with scissors.

On the cut sections, attach thin strips of yellow, orange, and purple origami or colored paper.

Cover the remaining sections with red paper.

Wrap the papers all the way around.

Then reshape the toilet paper roll back into a cylinder.

You can leave the red area as is.

Next, make a daruma face from another piece of paper and stick it onto the red part, then add the daruma’s pattern below the face—and you’re done! Try making and displaying them in different colors!

Connect origami tassels to a string, and attach the items you made along the center of the string.

Next, add red-and-white circular cutouts and a three-dimensional kusudama ornament, and you’re done! Try making a piece that brings color to the festive New Year atmosphere when gathering with family and friends.

Kagami mochi made with whipped paint

[Recommended for New Year] Let's make Kagami Mochi with whipped paint 🎍✨
Kagami mochi made with whipped paint

Recommended for New Year’s wall decorations in daycare! What you’ll need: shaving foam, liquid glue, a container, a spoon, a brush, a pen, and construction paper or origami paper.

First, use a pen to sketch a kagami mochi on the construction paper that will be your base.

Make the daidai (bitter orange) using origami or construction paper.

Next, let’s make the “whipped cream” in a container.

Squeeze some liquid glue into the container by eye.

If you start with a little, you can add more if needed.

Then add about the same amount of shaving foam as the glue.

Mix well with the spoon until it reaches a whipped-cream-like consistency.

Brush the “whip” onto your sketch, and you’re done!

maneki-neko (beckoning cat)

maneki-neko (beckoning cat)

In recent years, maneki-neko (beckoning cats) have come in a wide variety of designs.

Known as good-luck charms for prosperous business, they’re perfectly suited for the New Year, aren’t they? Of course the traditional designs are great, but if you line up maneki-neko that children have decorated in their own ways, you’re sure to kick off the year on a positive note.

Above all, their cute appearance means that simply displaying the children’s creations together makes for a lively wall decoration! It’s an idea that seems sure to invite good fortune into the entrance of a childcare room.

Lion dance wall art

Preschool Craft: Make a Cute Shishimai (Lion Dance) for a January Bulletin Board
Lion dance wall art

Here’s how to make a shishimai (lion dance) craft using a toilet paper roll.

Cut the roll, curl it, dip it in paint, and stamp patterns onto the lion dance costume areas.

Adding clear, bold patterns will really make the costume stand out.

For the lion’s facial expression, using colored pens and dot stickers is also recommended.

By tearing and pasting shiny gold and silver origami paper, you’ll create a festive New Year’s wall decoration.

Give it a try!
