[Killing Time] A Roundup of Fun Without Spending Money [Saving Money]

“I’m bored, but I don’t know what to do.” We all feel like this fairly often, don’t we?

While we’re at work or studying, we’re filled with things we want to do, but when we finally have some free time, we end up thinking, “So… what should I do?”

In this article, I’ll introduce activities and hobbies that don’t cost any money.

For the most part, they require no preparation and can be started on a whim.

Why not try something new to broaden your horizons in life?

Hiking

Perfect for Golden Week outings: the Kamakura Alps hiking course is amazing—you can enjoy both hiking and great food ✨
Hiking

When it comes to hiking, you can get exercise and a change of pace at the same time—two birds with one stone.

People often imagine hiking as gearing up to climb a mountain, but that’s not necessarily the case.

Originally, “hiking” refers to walking in nature in light clothing.

So it’s fine to walk in the mountains or in a park.

Beyond just walking, having a picnic or exploring eateries you’ve never tried can be fun, too.

If possible, set out wearing comfortable, easy-to-walk-in shoes.

playing on the rocky shore

Have you ever gone rock pooling? Unlike playing at the beach, rocky shores offer their own unique fun.

A classic highlight is interacting with creatures that live among the rocks.

Try catching and observing crabs, sea slugs, and more.

However, you need to be careful when exploring tidal pools.

It’s easy to get hurt if you fall, and some creatures can be dangerous to touch.

You should also check the times of high and low tide and the day’s wave conditions in advance.

Be especially careful if you’re with children.

It might be that you’re feeling bored because you don’t have a hobby.

How about attending a free trial class to find a new one? There are many kinds of trial classes, with popular options including yoga, Pilates, and voice training.

Trying a sports class like soccer could be fun as well.

First, let’s look up where you can take free trial lessons.

They’re often easy to find in shopping malls or inside train stations.

Cycling

Cycling

Cycling is also a popular way to pass the time.

Many people probably enjoy that feeling of slicing through the wind as they ride.

You can cruise along a cycling road, or hop on your bike to visit a café you’ve been curious about.

By the way, riding short, nearby routes is called pottering, riding on dedicated roads is called fast run, and going long distances is called touring.

Once you get used to it, try challenging yourself with a touring ride.

And if you don’t own a bicycle, renting one is also an option.

Sketch

Sketch

One of the great things about sketching is that all you need is paper and a pen.

By the way, it’s not widely known, but the word “sketch” actually refers to roughly depicting living creatures or structures.

So I hope you’ll start casually, without feeling any pressure.

Of course, once you’re having fun, it’s fine to trace with a fineliner or add color.

You might even end up with a wonderful piece, so it could be a good idea to have a sketchbook ready.

beachcombing

There are minerals on the beaches around here too... *I casually did some beachcombing and found rose quartz—here's the video.*
beachcombing

If you live near the ocean, why not try beachcombing? Beachcombing means collecting items washed up on the shore, such as sea glass and shells.

Beautiful pastel-colored sea glass is perfect for crafts! The colors and shapes created by nature will add charm to your work.

Among the drifted items, there aren’t only pretty things—there’s also a lot of trash.

While you’re beachcombing, why not pick up litter as well and contribute to eco-friendly efforts?

running

A complete running beginner can run this much in 5 months! Taking on their first marathon race!
running

Running is the best hobby for getting healthy without spending much money! If you start getting particular about your gear and shoes, it will cost a bit, but if it means gaining your health, that expense is a small price to pay, right? The key to sticking with running is setting goals! Running around your neighborhood or using a treadmill at the gym is great, of course, but to keep your motivation high, I also recommend challenging yourself with a marathon.
