In this article, I’ll introduce activities and hobbies that don’t cost any money.
For the most part, they require no preparation and can be started on a whim.

Walking is a classic way to kill time, but it’s hard to get motivated without a purpose.
That’s why I’d like to suggest visiting Shinto shrines.
It’s fun to walk from shrine to shrine, and strolling around the grounds is enjoyable too.
You can also enjoy touring so-called power spots or collecting goshuin (shrine stamps).
To start, try looking online and picking out a few shrines that catch your interest.
Be sure to wear comfortable clothes and shoes.
Games without equipment
There are times when you’re with friends or family but can’t help feeling bored, right? In moments like that, why not try a game? And by “game,” I don’t mean video games or board games, but simple ones you can play right away without any equipment.
Try looking for something that suits your group size and preferences, like a word association game or the “gyutan game.” You can also check books that introduce games or look on YouTube for ideas.
By the way, even if you’re alone, you might be able to pass the time by trying hand games or traditional children’s songs.
Finding night view spots
A great way to have fun for free—and a perfect date idea—is to go looking for night-view spots.
Of course, it’s fine to just visit a place you already know and enjoy the view, but hunting for new spots helps pass the time.
Just be careful: if you wander around without any plan, your date might get fed up, so at least have a few candidates in mind.
Also, for those who don’t have a car or a driver’s license, try checking out high-rise buildings or parks on elevated ground.
You might be surprised to find some spots with beautiful night views.

When you have some free time, why not take a fresh look at the familiar scenery around you? You might discover something new.
That’s why I recommend taking snapshots.
In short, snapshots are casually and quickly taken photos.

You don’t need a camera; feel free to give it a try with your smartphone.

If you want to spend a relaxed time indoors, library hopping is perfect.
When you hear “library,” you might picture the kind you had at school, but in recent years the atmosphere of libraries has been changing.
For example, some have carefully designed interiors or an attached café.
Many libraries even carry magazines and manga.
You can enjoy the differences between each library, or find a favorite and while away the hours there.
Factory tour
Did you know there are factory tours you can enjoy for free? This is a great chance to find out how everyday foods and vehicles are made.
Among the most popular are the tour of the Garigari-kun ice pop factory and JAL’s airplane manufacturing tour.
Many popular factory tours require reservations, so be sure to check in advance.

astronomical observation
Some of you might find yourselves with time on your hands at night.
In that case, I recommend stargazing.
You might think you need a telescope to do it, but it’s perfectly fine to start with the naked eye.
As you gaze at the moon and constellations, your everyday worries may just drift away.

Try to find a quiet place with as little light around you as possible.
