Luby Sparks is a five-piece co-ed band that plays alternative rock rooted in shoegaze and dream pop.
They’re known for writing songs with English lyrics, and their sound—clearly influenced by iconic ’90s bands like The Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine—is a major part of their appeal.
In 2017, they produced their first album with Max from Yuck, and have steadily honed their craft since then, including a collaboration with Andy Savours, who worked on My Bloody Valentine’s “m b v.” Although they faced setbacks—such as their China tour being canceled due to the pandemic—they continue to take on new musical challenges.
They’re highly recommended for younger listeners who admire ’90s music and for anyone who enjoys the distinctive harmonies created by intertwining male and female vocals.
KNOCKIN’ ON YOUR DOORL⇔R
The band L⇔R gained popularity with their refreshing musical style that mixes rock and J-pop.
Although they were active in the 1990s, many of their songs evoke the sound of the 1980s, and their catchy music won them many fans.
Among their tracks, one I especially recommend is “KNOCKIN’ ON YOUR DOOR.” It has a slight city-pop vibe, featuring a smooth vocal line with gentle rises and falls in pitch throughout.
The range is a bit on the higher side, but as long as you stay in key, it’s a song that anyone can sing.
NOX LUXMYTH & ROID
This is a dark fantasy-style anime song notable for its bold sound and profound lyrics.
Created by MYTH & ROID and released in October 2024, it was chosen as the ending theme for the TV anime Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- 3rd season.
The fusion of electronic soundscapes and powerful vocals conveys a grand sense of scale.
The lyrics are also compelling, portraying the strength to move forward by overcoming trials.
It’s an emotionally stirring work that explores themes such as darkness and light, and the individual and the community.
Northern CrossMay’n
A female singer who began taking full-fledged auditions in elementary school and made her major debut in high school under her real name, Mei Nakabayashi.
Aiming since childhood to be an artist who can both sing and dance, she rose to wide recognition as a new-generation female anime song singer after the success of tracks such as “Diamond Crevasse,” released under the name Sheryl Nome starring May’n for the TV anime Macross Frontier.
Her high expressive ability and vocal power evoke the world of each song and draw listeners in.
Since 2018, she has also been active as a stage actress, showcasing her multifaceted artistic sensibilities.
No ExcusesMeghan Trainor
This is the latest song by Meghan Trainor, who used to be the poster girl for curvy women.
It’s a pop track with striking lyrics that call out playboy men.
Despite the message, the song has an upbeat feel and the music video is dazzling.
If you sing it with your friends after meeting a lousy guy, it’ll blow away your bad luck with men.
