Beautiful autumn foliage in November.

In nursery schools and kindergartens, you want to nurture children’s imagination and fine motor skills through seasonal origami.

However, complex folds can be difficult for younger children.

In this article, we introduce origami activities featuring November-themed motifs—such as fallen leaves, acorns, and maple leaves—that even younger children can enjoy folding.

Even with simple steps, the results can be wonderful pieces that make children’s eyes shine.

Use this as a guide to enjoy a fun origami time with the kids!

Cute! Horsetail Origami

Cute! Horsetail Origami

Let’s make a cute horsetail (tsukushi) using 15×7.5 cm origami paper.

First, place the white side of the paper facing up and fold it into a square by bringing the top and bottom edges together.

Open it once the crease is made, then fold the bottom edge up to meet the crease.

Rotate the paper 90 degrees to the right and turn it over, then fold the top and bottom edges inward to make it into thirds.

Create the hakama (pleated trousers) look by making two step folds (valley–mountain) on the white section, then fold the top and bottom inward toward the center.

At this point, it’s easier if you squash-fold the right corner into a triangle.

Finally, fold all four corners of the brown section inward, and you’re done.

Autumn origami acorn

Let’s make an acorn with a hat using two sheets of origami paper.

Use a 15 × 7.5 cm sheet for the acorn and a 7.5 cm square for the hat.

First, we’ll make the acorn.

Fold the paper in half to make a square, then fold the top, bottom, and left corners toward the center—done.

Next, we’ll make the hat.

Fold the paper into a triangle twice to create creases.

Fold the bottom corner up to the center, then fold up along the crease to form a triangle.

Turn the paper over and fold the top corner down so it sticks out slightly below the base of the triangle.

Tuck both corners inward, then place it over the acorn you just made.

Three-dimensional bagworm

Three-dimensional bagworm

Here’s a 3D bagworm origami idea.

You’ll make it in two parts: one head piece and two cloak (mino) pieces.

First, we’ll make the head.

Fold the paper into a triangle to make a crease.

Fold the bottom corner up to the crease, then roll up the bottom edge about 5 mm.

Fold along the crease again to return it to a triangle.

Flip the paper over, fold both corners inward, then fold them back outward.

Fold the outer corners of the small triangles you just made upward, and also fold the bottom corner inward.

Next, for the cloak: Fold the paper into a triangle, then fold both side corners up to meet the top corner.

Slightly fold the raised top corner back down, open that part, and squash it flat.

Flip the squashed section to the back, then fold the lower left and right edges slightly inward.

That’s one cloak piece done.

Make two of these, attach them to the head, draw the face, and you’re finished.

An easy way to fold a maple leaf (origami)

An easy way to fold a maple leaf (origami)

In November, when the autumn colors are at their most beautiful, let’s try folding a maple leaf.

First, fold it into a triangle and unfold it.

Fold both sides toward the crease to form a sharp triangular shape.

Turn it over, then fold from the long, pointed corner toward the corner on the diagonal.

Turn it over again, open the two pocket-like sections, and shape it into a diamond.

Fold up both of the long, thin triangles, spread the small triangles that formed inside to both sides, then fold one of the long triangles downward and trim the corners as needed to neaten the shape—and you’re done.

Make lots of them and create a maple-leaf scenery inside your room!

How to fold a cute rabbit

How to fold a cute rabbit

Here’s an idea for making a rabbit with origami.

Since the head and body are made separately, please prepare two sheets of origami paper.

We’ll start with the head: first, fold the paper into a triangle twice.

Next, squash the pocket to form a square, then fold the top corners on both the front and back down to meet the bottom corner.

Fold both sides of the top point in toward the center line to make the rabbit’s ears.

Fold one ear diagonally, then fold the bottom corner inward to finish the head.

For the body, fold the paper into a triangle to make a crease, then fold all four edges to meet that crease.

Fold both side corners inward, and on one side, make a single step fold over that.

Fold the whole piece in half along the crease to finish.

Attach the head to the body to complete your rabbit.

Cute persimmons perfect for autumn

[Autumn Origami] Easy and Cute Persimmon Folding Method / Decoration, Food, Fruit — Origami Persimmon
Cute persimmons perfect for autumn

A quintessential autumn fruit! Let me show you how to make a persimmon.

Prepare one 15 cm square of orange origami paper and one 7.5 cm square of green origami paper.

First, fold the top and bottom edges of the 15 cm paper to meet at the center to make a rectangle.

Rotate the paper 90 degrees to a vertical orientation, then fold it in half top to bottom to make a crease.

Next, fold the top and bottom toward that center crease again, but fold slightly short of the crease rather than exactly on it.

Make the folds so that the folded sections and the remaining central section are the same width.

Finally, fold all four corners inward to complete the fruit.

For the leaf, do a “zabuton” fold three times with the green paper.

On the third time, slightly fold the corners first, then fold toward the center.

Flip the paper over, open and flatten the four pouch-like sections, then fold the corners to finish.

Attach it to the fruit to complete your persimmon.

Speaking of autumn, it’s the season when mushrooms are delicious.

So let’s make a mushroom out of origami.

First, fold up the bottom edge of the origami paper.

Make sure the folded section and the remaining white section are the same width.

Turn the paper over and fold the left and right edges in to meet at the center.

Open the pockets on both sides and squash them into triangles, then fold the corners on both sides of each triangle inward.

To finish, fold the corners of the stem and the lower part of the cap to round them off.

It would also look cute if you draw a face on it.
