Recreation for daycare centers and kindergartens: fun activities for children

Children in daycare and kindergarten are full of curiosity and energy! Still, some teachers might struggle to come up with play ideas.

There are also days when the weather keeps you indoors.

Here, we introduce a variety of activities that children in kindergarten and daycare can enjoy! We’ve gathered fun activities—from dance, exercise, and games to crafts—that are suitable for babies through toddlers.

Active, movement-based play is a big hit, too.

Let children and adults play together and enjoy a wonderful time!

fishing

I wonder if we can catch a lot? A fishing game with magnets and capsules♪
fishing

You often see fishing on TV and many children know about it, but aren’t there actually few who have experienced it themselves? It might be difficult to do real fishing depending on the location, but how about trying a version you can enjoy indoors? Attach clips to the fish and a magnet to the fishing rod so you can “catch” them.

You can make the fish out of recycled materials, like toilet paper rolls, capsule toy containers, or empty lactic acid drink bottles.

You could also use materials like raffia tape to represent water and arrange the fish on top.

Abuku-tatta

Abukutatta [with vocals] - Nursery Rhyme / Hand-Play Song
Abuku-tatta

It’s the traditional play song “Abuku Tatta.” One child is chosen as “it” and stands inside the circle.

The game is divided into two parts: a singing-and-playing part where you check whether what’s in the pot has finished boiling, and a later part where a ghost appears.

There also seems to be a version where the children are chased by the ghost, run away, and it develops into a game of tag.

It’s a game packed with elements that children love.

Where are you from? Jump

[Kids’ Exercise You Can Do at Home] Antagata Dokosa Jump (For Preschoolers to Lower Elementary)
Where are you from? Jump

The traditional children’s song “Antagata Dokosa” has long been loved.

You play by jumping to the rhythm of the song.

Since just jumping is a bit too easy, let’s add movements by striking a pose whenever the song ends with the syllable “sa.” For example, only on “sa,” clap your hands, spread your arms and legs like a star, or touch your hands to the floor.

It’s also fun to gradually expand the range of body movements, like, “Next, let’s try this.” It’s a recommended game that lets you move your body without taking up much space.

The Little Bird’s Move

[Exercise & Gymnastics Kids Enjoy] “Little Bird Moving House” Recommended from Age 3 / Rule-based movement games and exercise/gymnastics educational videos from ‘Okaasan to Issho’ to improve motor skills
The Little Bird’s Move

This is an indoor game called “Little Birds Moving House.” Children sit on the floor, and when the tagger shouts “Time to move!” they must switch territories.

The tagger transforms into different animals, so the children have to move without getting caught by that animal.

When moving, they stay seated on the floor, bend their knees, and scoot in a triangular sitting position.

It’s a game that can be played with a small number of players.

Red Light, Green Light

[We tried playing as a big family] Daruma-san ga Koronda
Red Light, Green Light

It’s the classic, hugely popular game “Daruma-san ga koronda.” Players are split into an Oni (tagger) and children.

While the Oni turns their back and says “Daruma-san ga koronda,” the children move closer to the Oni.

When the Oni turns around and is watching, the children must freeze.

If they move at that moment, they get caught by the Oni.

However, if you manage to touch the Oni while their back is turned, you can free your captured friends! Sneak up on the Oni quietly!
