[Childcare] Perfect for October! Autumn crafts to enjoy with 5-year-olds

October is packed with events like sports day, field trips, and Halloween.

Some five-year-olds will also be celebrating Shichi-Go-San.

How about making some lovely crafts to help children enjoy October even more? We’ve gathered ideas themed around these events, as well as ones kids can use on the day itself.

We’ve also included craft ideas with slightly more complex steps that five-year-olds can handle.

It would be great if they could take a few days and work on them until they’re satisfied.

Since items made by children are treated as works, we use the term “seisaku” (production) in the text.

So realistic! Making roasted sweet potatoes

As the weather turns a bit chilly in October, why not make a lifelike roasted sweet potato? Cut cardboard into potato shapes and wrap them with yellow origami paper.

Apply glue to the lower half and attach construction paper cut into sweet potato shapes.

Next, tear the upper half of the construction paper to create the look of potato skin.

Finish by wrapping it with aluminum foil, and your roasted sweet potato is complete! It’s a perfect activity for 5-year-olds.

Enjoy the sensation of tearing the paper and handling the foil, and have fun making roasted sweet potatoes together.

Target Shooting Game: Halloween Version

This is a Halloween version of a well-known target game for preschool settings.

With ideas kids are sure to love—like a “Stretchy Mummy Stick” made from a straw and origami paper, a “Bat Shooter” made from a milk carton and rubber bands, and a “Monster Air Cannon” made from a plastic bottle and a balloon.

The instructions for each are simple, so why not let the children choose one and make it together? If you’re making targets, prepare some construction paper.

Place the target on top of a paper cup filled with candy, and if they manage to knock the target down, they get the candy— guaranteed to get everyone excited!

Fluffy Yarn Monster

[Preschool Craft] Make Adorable Fluffy Monsters with Yarn!
Fluffy Yarn Monster

Here’s a craft idea for making a cute monster out of yarn.

Prepare some yarn and wrap it around the hand opposite your dominant hand.

Once you’ve wrapped enough so that you can’t see your skin, slide the yarn off your hand and tie the bundle tightly with a piece of yarn about 10 cm long.

Make sure to knot it securely so it doesn’t come undone.

If it’s hard to do alone, have an adult help.

Cut into the two loops created by tying the bundle—insert scissors into each loop and snip to open the rings.

After both sides are cut, fluff and trim the yarn so it forms a round shape, cutting off any excess with scissors.

Finally, attach eye parts and you’re done! Once you get the hang of it, try using multiple colors of yarn to make a colorful monster.

The Flying Witch of Halloween

[Kindergarten/Preschool] It moves so smoothly! October Halloween Flying Witch Painting and Craft
The Flying Witch of Halloween

Perfect for October: here are some ideas for making a “Flying Witch for Halloween.” First, draw a circle with a white crayon on the construction paper that will be your background, then fill it in with yellow.

Once it’s filled, blend it with a tissue to create a soft effect—your moon is complete.

Add some stars around it as well.

Next, use origami paper to make a ghost and a witch, and draw their faces.

Finally, assemble the broom parts you prepared in advance and stick them onto the background along with the witch and the ghost—that’s it! The broom has twine threaded through it so the witch can move from side to side.

Chitose Ame bag

[Made in October] Chitose-ame Bag
Chitose Ame bag

Chitose-ame candy is essential for Shichi-Go-San in November.

It’s said that chitose-ame carries the wish for children to grow up healthy and strong.

These days, some parents even make the chitose-ame bags by hand.

So how about making chitose-ame bags as an October craft? It’s easy: paste white paper onto red construction paper, then add the “Shichi-Go-San” characters and a turtle and crane made from the children’s handprints.

Print the Shichi-Go-San characters in a light color so the children can trace them with crayons.

Provide samples of the turtle and crane as well, and have the children draw them.

Bright-red persimmon

[Kindergarten/Daycare] Looks real? October autumn flavors! Bright red persimmon craft
Bright-red persimmon

It’s an idea for making a three-dimensional persimmon.

Accordion-fold the origami paper and fold it in half, then glue the folded edges together.

Make two of these, attach their ends to each other to form a circle.

Make three circles in total.

Thread and secure some twine through one of the three.

Use double-sided tape to attach the remaining two to the back of the piece with the twine.

Finally, thread a leaf piece onto the twine to finish.

If you use red origami paper, you can make an apple as well, so try making them together for an autumn wall display.

Halloween Paper-Cut Stamp

Let’s use paper-cut stamps to make lots of Halloween motifs! Combine two plastic bottle caps to create the base of the stamp, then cut cushion tape to form pumpkin and ghost faces.

It’s a detailed task, but letting five-year-olds express themselves freely will nurture their imagination! Create the Halloween motifs by cutting colored origami paper with scissors.

Preparing simple cutting patterns will make it easier for five-year-olds to participate.

Stamping the motifs made from origami—popping the stamp on again and again—is so much fun that the kids are sure to be completely absorbed!
