Yeah, yay!!Yokoyama Daisuke / Mitani Takumi

It’s a very upbeat, cheerful song with occasional “Yay!” call-and-responses.

It’s a song about homes: while different creatures have different kinds of homes, in the end your own home makes you feel the biggest “Yay!”, and the home itself hopes to be the place where everyone feels the biggest “Yay!”

Hungry Mantis - Okaasan to Issho - Song of June 2019
hungry mantisHanada Yuuichirou, Ono Atsuko

It’s the June 2019 song “Hungry Praying Mantis.” The mantis, who loves anything that moves, goes out to hunt when it gets hungry and tries to catch prey as soon as it spots it—but upon seeing hardworking ants and bees, or a cicada that has slept underground for years, it gives up, deciding it can’t eat them.

That endearing hesitation is utterly charming.

The song is packed with onomatopoeia that kids love, making it an addictive tune.

A nostalgic song for moms’ and dads’ generation, Dango San Kyodai.

It’s a very unique tune about three close-knit brothers, sung to a tango rhythm.

It was the January 1999 song, performed at the time by big brother Kentaro Hayami and big sister Ayumi Shigemori.

There are many popular songs from Okaasan to Issho, but this one was such a huge hit that it briefly became a social phenomenon.

The lyrics, which sing about the three brothers’ personalities, daily lives, and feelings, are easy to remember, and I think kids today can enjoy singing it, too.

The next time you have skewered dango, why not give it a sing?

One step, two steps, a walkHanada Yuuichirou, Ono Atsuko

[With Mother] One Step, Two Steps, A Stroll — Lyrics/Composition by Edamame-ns (GReeeeN?) — NHK E-TV April 2021 Monthly Song
One step, two steps, a walkHanada Yuuichirou, Ono Atsuko

It’s a very catchy song that sings, “Go outside, take a walk, and find what you love!” The rhythm is perfect for a walking pace, and the bright, uplifting lyrics are great.

It makes you want to hum along while taking a stroll.

This is a bit of an aside, but the track aired as the song of April 2021 and became a hot topic online at the time.

The songwriting credit was listed as Edamame-ns, and rumors spread that it might be an alias of the music group GReeeeN, based on the style, melody, and overall feel of the lyrics.

Where is this mushroom?Yokoyama Daisuke / Mitani Takumi

[NHK] Dokonoko no Kinoko / Okaasan to Issho (Covered by UtaSta) [Children’s Songs, Nursery Rhymes, Hand Play] Japanese Children’s Song, Nursery Rhymes
Where is this mushroom?Yokoyama Daisuke / Mitani Takumi

Dokonoko Kinoko has a tongue-twister-like title and lyrics that are really fun.

It’s a song that shares secret stories about mushrooms found in all sorts of places.

You’ll find yourself increasingly drawn in by its distinctive melody and lyrics that evoke a mysterious world.

The lyrics string together strange words that sound like onomatopoeia or magical incantations—you’ll definitely feel like singing along! By the way, the mushrooms that appear at the beginning of the song are real varieties.

Some are even ones you can find at the supermarket, so it’s fun to look out for them! The more you listen, the more you’ll lose yourself in the wondrous world of mushrooms.

This song was created as the January 2009 song and is one of the most popular numbers on “Okaasan to Issho.” The lyrics are uplifting and cheerful, so if your child says, “I’ll sing it to cheer you up, Mom/Dad—please listen!” you might be so happy you end up in tears.

There’s choreography that matches the song, like clapping your hands and making big arm movements.

The motions are repeated and not difficult, so it sounds fun to learn them together with your child and sing while dancing.

Let’s hang out!Yokoyama Daisuke / Ono Atsuko

“Let’s Meet Up!” (April 2016 ‘Okaasan to Issho’ Song) – Rough Arrangement
Let’s hang out!Yokoyama Daisuke / Ono Atsuko

This was Atsuko Ono’s debut “Monthly Song” after she became the 21st Uta no Oneesan in April 2016.

It’s a song about greeting a friend and saying, “Let’s meet again anytime.” During that year’s Family Concert at NHK Hall in Tokyo, Takumi Mitani, the 20th Uta no Oneesan, appeared as a guest and performed this song together with her.
